The All Important Popcorn Thread

Recommended Posts

Yes, I know there's a popcorn thread, but I have a new twist on this theme.

At 6 weeks post-surgery, what are your opinions on eating popcorn? I e-mailed my nutritionist, but I'm not sure if I'll hear back from her by tomorrow or not. I'd like to go to a movie this weekend and it is a prerequisite to order popcorn at movies. If I can't have popcorn, I'm not going! haha Have any of your doctors advised you on this oh so important food item?

Linda

Well, I was surprised when I got a reply so quick from my nutritionist. Here's what she said. I'm not sure what she meant by fibre content though.

You are not going to like my answer. I would prefer that you didn't do the popcorn until you reach the point in your diet where you are eating regular foods again. By my calculation this should be mid January for you. IF you do eat popcorn in the future, be sure it is free of any butter, AND you should not be able to eat more than just a few kernals - a half of a handful at most -due to the size of your pouch. Popcorn is VERY treacherous territory due to Fiber content and could be a slipper slope towards bad habits (chips, fries)

Just remember whatever got your here (lapband) - will not get you there (a healthier, fit physique). Discipline is remembering what you want and the band is only a TOOL to help you remember.

I think your nutritionist makes a good point about habits. :Banane20: I've never really been into popcorn anyway, but I think situational eating is something that at least I MUST break away from if I am to be successful.

What she may have meant about Fiber is the rough texture of the popcorn...I don't know. That's the only thing I can think of. I remember my nutritionist telling me to be careful with fibrous veggies like brocolli - :) One of the only veggies I can stand.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
