Hi, all: I’ve been in the April 2022 Surgery Board, but I have a question for here.
My surgery will likely be in the coming 4-6 weeks. I had planned on the sleeve, but testing shows a very large hiatal hernia…more than half my stomach is in my chest. 😳 I do know that is not that uncommon.
Anyway, has anyone here had the sleeve procedure at the same time as having a large hernia repaired? I’d prefer the sleeve because of the shorter surgery duration. But, I want to do what is the best medical decision.
I have to articulate a preference to my surgeon before we meet in a week or so.
Thanks in advance for any information.

One doctor i follow on youtube says he sees hernias all the time and he repairs them during the surgery, he only does sleeves (mexico one) but i have seen tons on here do sleeves and get their hernias repaired. Ive been curious if i have one and my surgery is next monday and the surgeon did say if there is one he would repair it.

I don't know what size my hiatal hernia was, but they repaired it at the same time they did the sleeve surgery.

Just now, GradyCat said:

That makes sense…most seem to get repaired and the sleeve is done at the same surgery.

thank you. I am beginning to see that the sleeve vs gb is likely a matter of preference although, my surgeon did mention the chance of heartburn with a sleeve. I’ll have to go do some research to make sure I heard that correctly.

I didn't even know I had a hiatal hernia either when I had my lap band placed. My surgeon told me beforehand that if I had one she would repair it, and she said I most likely did have one.

I guess hiatal hernias and obesity are the same as Forrest Gump and Jenny when Forrest said, "Jenny and me are like peas and carrots!"

They just go together. Well. A lot of the time they do.

I had a Mini Bypass (a quicker surgery than the typical RNY), and had my large hiatal hernia repaired at the same time. It was a surprise to both my surgeon and I, as I was never aware I had a hernia. He didn't tell me how much of my stomach was in my chest, but he called it a "large hiatal hernia" and guessed I'd had it for at least a decade.

If your surgeon offers the Mini Bypass/Omega Loop, give it a look. I had pre-existing GERD, so a sleeve was too great a risk of having even worse reflux post-surgery. With the bypass, my GERD is gone.

Thank you. Your reply is quite helpful. Because of the possibility of GERD with the sleeve, I am leaning towards the bypass. I will ask my surgeon about the procedure you mentioned.

thanks again!

I had sleeve and hernia repair in 2017. I just had revision to bypass and hernia repair again. I no longer have gerd. I went to a different surgeon this time and my surgery was kinda major bc my whole sleeve was in my chest. I guess my stomach was growing in my chest and had fat and stuff around it. But I’m all fixed up now and I’m feeling so much better. Better surgeon and no more hernia and no more GERD. Good luck with your surgery.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
