Burning in stomach 12 months post-op

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I’ve been trying to get into my surgeon’s office but they’re really booked out. As I keep trying, I wanted to see if anyone has experienced this post-op. (Sleeved 2/2021)

Since December, I’ve frequently been experiencing a burning sensation in the lower left part of my stomach, regardless of what I do or don’t eat. I’ve taken Prilosec and it helps temporarily, but the feeling is getting more intense. I don’t have any reflux/heartburn symptoms or acid coming up…just the pain below.

I’m going to see my primary care doctor for it next week, but was wondering if anyone had this? I’ve heard of GERD being a common post-op side effect, but this is nothing like the gastric reflux I had before surgery. Makes me think it’s an ulcer but would be grateful to know if anyone had these symptoms too. Thanks!

i havent had surgery yet. but for me lower left pain turned out to be diverticulosis (pouches that formed in your sigmoid colon) a CT scan with contrast can confirm that.

The burning from GERD usually occurs in the throat as the acid from the stomach rises.

An overproduction of acid can cause sharp cutting pains across the lower stomach. Or it could be an ulcer as you thought. If your PPI helps temporarily it could be an ulcer, too much acid &/or GERD. Don’t eat late at night, avoid spicy foods, carbonation, caffeine, dairy products, & see if that helps.

Could be a hernia or kidney stones. Gall stones cause pain on the lower right so that’s ruled out.

Try to get into your GP sooner if you can’t get an appointment with your surgeon. Or go to your nearest emergency centre especially if the pain can’t be managed or gets worse.

All the best.

Is it around your belly button? Just wondering if it could be your gallbladder

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
