Excited to be new to the group

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am new to this group. I had Gastric sleeve done 11/22/2021. This was strongly recommended by my pulmonologist who says my pulmonary hypertension, CHF, and chronic hypoxic respiratory failure are all due to my weight. I’ve lost 20lbs since surgery date which I feel like is very slow. I am struggling with my obsession of food. Trying to maintain healthy diet for the most part (it’s hard sometimes when we eat out). I’m exercising 3 times a week for 1 1/2 hours at a time (I’m on oxygen and have to go to rehab place where they can measure my oxygen levels). I also struggle with night eating which causes me a lot of stress (would love to hear if anyone else struggles with this). Glad I found this group and excited to connect with others here on this forum.
p.s. my surgeon is Vinay Goyal of Lubbock but his name doesn’t appear in list of surgeons.

Welcome & congratulations on your surgery.

Never be afraid to ask for help. This process is not always easy. Many hiccups & roadblocks along the way as we work through the crap that lead us to being overweight. We don’t talk about the importance of doing the head work for nothing 🙂

Were you recommended a therapist as part or your pre surgery program? If not ask your team for a recommendation to someone who specialise in eating disorders & bariatric patients. You may find working with a therapist about your cravings & night eating very helpful. There are many people on this forum who have benefitted from working through their food obsessions etc. with therapy to understand what’s drinking them to eat & finding strategies to manage those drives.

Good luck & congratulations on your weight loss so far. It’s just the beginning.

Yes I’m seeing a therapist who specializes in eating disorders and bariatric patients. I have been seeing her since before the surgery. She’s the one who recommended I join this group. Thanks for the welcome.

That's why these forums exist, so members can share experiences and ask questions.

As regards your mental issues with food and night eating, have you considered talking with the therapist at the surgeon's office about this?

Stick to the plan. It'll work for you. Don't worry about the numbers on the scale. Just focus on getting in the Water, getting in the Protein, limiting your food portions.

Hello and welcome. I see you already have a bariatric therapist which would have been my advice. I struggle with boredom eating and I am still trying to find a good therapist in my area to help with this. I’m losing but it’s more of a struggle than it would be without disordered eating issues (I assume). I have found bariatric pal to be a wonderful source Of support and hope you will too.

I had Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and did treatment from 2016 to 2019. My dietician helped me with the food issues and my therapist dealt with the mental issues. I had to figure out what void or pain I was replacing with food and what my triggers were. I also had to replace the junk food that I craved late at night with real food like a Peanut Butter and jelly sandwich or a bowl of Soup.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
