Anyone get covid or other illness during sleeve recovery?

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone tested positive for covid or had influenza, bronchitis, stomach flu within days/weeks of surgery and what your experience has been like? my surgery is in 8 days and I usually get sick a few times this time of year- so nervous

I have not, but was told by my surgeon that if I do get sick to stay hydrated. He said dehydration will sneak up super quick. Also vomiting could cause esophagus and stomach issues. Apparently we no longer make stomach acid?!
Good luck and stay healthy!

I had a bad bout of cellulitis that started to go septic and ended up on IV antibiotics in the hospital. No real difference from pre-surgery bouts of this (once you get cellulitis it never truly goes away, just goes into remission), other than that I had to be VERY specific about my diet because I was still on full liquids.

We still make ample stomach acids in our tummy to digest the food we consume. After surgery, the hunger pangs you may feel are from excess stomach acid (not because you are hungry). Plus developing reflux/gerd is a side effect of sleeve surgery which is stomach acids rising into your esophagus. The issue with vomiting may be because you‘re consuming so little you don’t have much to bring up except bile & acids which could burn your esophagus. (Mind you I vomited very differently after surgery - more of a gurgle up then a heaving of stomach muscles.)

You may be more susceptible to picking up viruses & bugs because your body is undergoing stress from the reduced calorie intake. I had my surgery in late autumn & if someone was going to pick up a bug it would have been me but I didn’t. Just take precautions, hand washing, mask wearing, avoid anyone who’s sick, etc. if you’re worried.

Hope all goes well.

I am 10 mos. post RNY and am recently diagnosed with Covid. I am well past the recovery time you are specifically asking about. I have lost all taste and smell. As a result, I need to be especially mindful of drinking and eating. It’s not usually an issue for me. Right now, I’m eating mostly shakes so I can maximize my Protein intake. I can eat and am not nauseated but with no taste, have no desire for anything. I’m hoping I regain my senses sooner rather than later. I believe that’s happening as I’m starting to get tiny bits of taste here and there.

Great question. I worry about the same thing. Surgery in 2 days. I have a sinus issue that's been going on for over a year, and it flares up here and there so I can't always tell if I'm getting sick or not. I was scheduled for surgery earlier this year and ended up having to postpone due to illness (SO glad I was on top of that, would NOT have wanted to recover while being ill). So, I understand the concern.

I had the covid vaccine in March and still got covid in July which turned into Covid pneumonia. So glad it’s behind me - I get my surgery in December. Best wishes to you all goes well!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
