How are you doing after surgery?

Hi there! I am so sorry for the late reply.......life has been challenging this past month. Did you have your surgery in August? I hope you did and that all is well. Please let me know.

I am doing well....still no reflux!

My weight loss is much slower than I would like. I weighed 225 on July 15th when I started the pre-op liquid diet and lost 6 lbs. On surgery day, July 22nd, I weighed 218. So I have lost 18lbs in 7 weeks and a total of 25lbs. My surgeon reminded me that my goal is to lose a total of 50-60lbs so I've actually lost about 50% of my goal. That perspective turned around my thinking and I am more optimistic.

I am currently in a 9 day stall. Hopefully I will enter the 100's soon. I am going to increase my Water intake, exercise and Protein this week and pray the scale moves downward.

I also converted from VSG to RNY with a hiatal hernia and GERD on 9/9. I remember being nauseated with everything after the sleeve. Nothing has made me nauseous this time and I feel I could probably eat way more than the 4 ounces I am restricted to, which concerns me. I have lost about 10 pounds since surgery (197 pounds on surgery day). Wondering if anyone has found it much easier to eat this time around?

For me, once I hit solid foods, it was a totally different ballgame. I was able to 1/2c of puree the first month but I can not eat more than 2 tablespoons of solid. I have to eat miniscule bites, chew to liquid or I get the foamies (i.e. lots of saliva and it comes up). I've lost 33 lbs. as of this morning. Surgery was Aug. 4th, 2021.

I guess I should just be happy that I don't have the 'foamies' :)

Yes, yes be happy hehe. I didn't have the problem till I hit solids so beware. 😅 So far I'm not a "dumper" but man, do I get the foamies. I have learned something that may help me or anyone else in the future after a horrendous day the other day. Taking 3 of the mini tabs anti gas Mylanta helped me tremendously. I had thought food was still stuck in my stoma, even after I expelled the extra saliva many times (sorry TMI). But it was really gas pushing up from possibly old food in my pouch and making me (and unfortunately my body) think there was food stuck in my throat so my body kept making extra saliva. I read about that phenomenon which is why I thought I'd try the anti gas Mylanta tabs. It miraculously worked.

I had GERD before my VSG surgery in 2014, and it only got worse over the next six years. Nothing helped, including PPI's. Fast forward to 2020. After a bunch of diagnostic tests to verify my GERD/Gastritis/Esophagitis, I had bypass surgery October 2020. I haven't had GERD since. I'm off all acid reflux medications. I've lost 56 lbs. since surgery and feel better than I felt in my 40's (I'm 64). I've got a ton of energy, walk 5 miles five days/week and do aquatic fitness classes 5 day/week. I'm loving my new, healthier self and so glad I made the decision to get the surgery. Yes, it is a life-long decision and I've forever changed how I can eat and process food, but so worth it!

Needless to say, I would recommend the revision to anyone with severe GERD.

What a wonderful outcome! The 56lbs you lost was that after the revision? I go in for revision next week and have been looking for others experiences. Thank you for sharing and congratulations!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
