Nauseated on Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Has anyone else experienced nausea while on liquid diet? I'm on day 12 of my liquid diet and suddenly feel very nauseated. I've been keeping up with my Protein Shakes, having broths, and SF jello/popcicles and at least 64 oz per day. Also, I've experienced the worst Constipation I've ever experienced.

I'm going to email my team but wondering if anyone else experienced any of this.

Plus side, surgery is Monday! YAY

high Protein diets can cause Constipation - and so can too low a Fiber intake. Ta da! You're doing both on that pre-op diet. Check with your clinic to see if you can take Miralax or a stool softener to help with that. There's probably not much in there since you aren't eating solid food, but if the constipation is uncomfortable, then...

In addition to what @catwoman7 said, Constipation can cause nausea for some people. Hopefully you will feel better once things start moving again! 🤗

I had same issues ended up in ER I was in so much pain from Constipation. They gave me some relief ended up at GI doctor, she induced I was so impacted took 2 days to clear up. I drink miralax with my Water once a day as suggested by her, so far so good. Presently I can’t drink my Protein Shakes or eat food, I am 17 days out and I do all suggestions, bring the food to my mouth, just can’t get it in my mouth. Only thing I have had luck with in the broth from wonton Soup. I have yet to commit but no desire for food.

This has happened with plain Water for me. I used to drink a lot of water before surgery, but since day 1 after surgery every single sip of water makes me violently sick. After 1 day, they switched water with apple juice, and I was fine. I'm 15 days post-op now, and I still cannot tolerate plain water. I dilute apple juice with water and it's fine as long as it has some flavour in it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
