Pre-op diet & failure

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm new & my surgery is Monday, 3/1, at 1p.m. I have been pending surgery since my first date (12/22) was cancelled due to COVID. During this time, I started & stopped the pre-op diet twice. This last time, I had 11 days' notice and I have fairly compliant but not 100%. I had some food funeral moments & then would resume. I've lost about 10lbs on it. I'm scared that maybe I messed up my chance & I'll get in the OR and the surgeon will somehow see that I cheated & be like, "NOPE." Can anyone speak to this happening or not? Thanks 💗

food only stays in your stomach for a few hours max so they won’t know that way. They basically want your liver to shrink, but they don’t have a before pic to compare it to. So they need it shrunk enough to work comfortably and safely. Stick with it from here on out, no more funerals and you’ll be ok. Also some surgeons have no preop diets at all other than the usual one night before etc. My surgeon said in all his years and 1000s of sleeves he’s only had to stop the procedure once due to liver size. This is - for many people - the most difficult part of the whole process. Stick with it, you can do it! (And yes I bet starting and stopping is mentally brutal).

Don’t cheat. There are a few reasons I was told to stick w the pre op diet. 1) it shrinks your liver bed and allows the surgeon room to see and work where he needs to work.
2) this is the start of your new life-make those changes now and follow the rules so you can be successful after surgery too following the rules laid down for you.
YOU CAN DO THIS!!
Just think once the surgery is over the hunger pains will be much easier to manage. Use that Honeymoon period to make lasting changes to your eating/lifestyle and they will become habits. Good luck tomorrow! Keep us updated!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
