Hospital covid restrictions

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Just wanted to share my experience in the hospital after surgery. Because of covid, I was not allowed any visitors. I never felt I really needed someone there looking at me anyway. If I could have done it all over again, I would've postponed until that restriction was lifted. It was okay during the night getting assistance from the nurses and aides, but during the day, especially right after moving in, I was left alone and it wasn't always easy getting assistance with things as simple as reaching your next 1 oz cup of Water. Nobody during the day ever helped me with my bedding. It was a nightmare. Luckily I was only there overnight.

I had my surgery on Feb 2nd and due to covid guidelines I couldn't have visitors either. I couldn't even have someone with meningitis pre-op while I waited for surgery. My stay overall was good, I did a lot of face timing and when I needed to get up relied on the buttons on the bed. My hardest time was the pre-op, I couldn't stop crying. But the nurses were so nice and comforting.

I would agree about the covid restrictions - at first I was completely fine with it - just drop me off and I’ll let you know when to pick me up. However, you are right- the nurses took care of meds - but it was on me to fix bedding, go unplug my IV pole to use the bathroom, drag it along, plug it back on, get back in bed, try to reach the pillows - or the table with my Water. I ended up there 3 nights. On the evening before discharge they lifted the no visitors so my husband came after work. Having him help me made such a difference. If I’d do it again- I’d wait until after no covid restrictions to have a close loved one there to help at least a couple hours out of the day and pass some time.

I didn’t mind being by myself at all- I was super spacey because of the anesthesia so I don’t think I’d have been good company anyway. I just kind of hung out in pre-op and read my book, so I didn’t really miss having company.

My kids are younger and I didn’t want to concern them so I never told them about the surgery. They just know I was away for appointments, so my husband wouldn’t have been able to visit anyway since he was with them. I texted him a few times, but the time passed really fast and before I knew it I was getting picked up.

In the end it’s just a day or two- I am happy I had my surgery done even during the restrictions because it’s done now.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
