How many calories per day?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I am coming up on 3 weeks post op VSG next Monday. I was allowed to start soft foods such as ground meet/canned chicken, etc. today. After looking through my post op binder, I was wondering if any of you received any sort of calorie limit for when you start more solid foods? The info in my binder mainly talks about Protein and Fluid daily amounts. I just want to make sure that the foods that I am choosing are not exceeding a certain calorie limit?? Does that make sense? I can give an example of the things that I ate today and calorie/protein total to see what you all think??

Breakfast-small homemade strawberry protein smoothie 165 calories, 37 g protein

morning snack-cup of lipton cream of chicken Soup 60 calories 2g protein

lunch-about 2 oz of light and fit yogurt 20 calories 3g protein, a very small portion of cream of potato soup with Protein Powder 90 calories 13g protein. I ate an early lunch and could only eat a little bit and felt nauseated so I came back about an hour and a half later and had a small portion of Sugar Free Chocolate pudding 30 calories and a couple of bites of chicken salad 20 calories 2g protein

Dinner-1 beef/pork Italian meatball with a small amount of mozzarella cheese on it and marinara sauce 145 calories 14g protein and 1/4 c of homemade unsweetened applesauce 20 calories

I drank approximately 50 oz of calorie free fluids throughout the day as well.

so about 580 calories and around 70g protein.

I know it seems like a weird choices of foods...does this seem normal????? I just want to make sure that my choices seem ok and that I am not going over in calories. I'm getting enough protein everyday along with my fluids.

Sorry for the long post!! Just wanted to see what you all think! Thanks!!!!

no - we were just told to focus on Protein and fluids the first few weeks/months. I think that's true of a lot of us. Most people eat so little the first few months post-surgery that once you get all your daily protein and Fluid requirements met, the overall calories really aren't an issue. Since I tracked the whole time (and still do, almost six years later), I know I ate in the 600-800 range for much of that first year, but I wasn't actively monitoring that. I really didn't have to.

Sounds right on track. 600-800 is the standard, with the focus on Protein.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
