RNY Struggling Loser with no Thyroid, thoughts?

Recommended Posts

On 11/16/20 I had gastric bypass. I had my thyroid removed, half 25 years ago, half 10 years ago. I also had a full hysterectomy 12 yrs ago. No hormone replacement. I feel like the world's slowest loser. Tomorrow starts month 3 and I'm only down 19 lbs. However, in May '17 I weighed 343, lots of up and down in between (back up to 291 May of 20) but was down to 261 on surgery day, only 19 lbs so far since surgery, keeping calories at 800ish. I'm either freezing or sweating. 2 weeks ago after calling the endocrinologist cause I felt awful, my tsh was .09 so I was hyper, now he has me skipping one day a week of my .125 Synthroid. I am not losing like the reports I see, I'm exercising a little, treadmill & bike 10 min 2-3 times a day most days. I'm feeling frustrated because my results don't feel commensurate with my effort. I'm mortified at the thought of increasing calories. I am getting my Protein. There are so many opinions and schools of thought regarding calories. I'm just never comfortable, ice cold or sweating when I shouldn't be. Seems weird. Thoughts?

how is your Water intake? not drinking enough will slow your weight loss. also your vitamin's etc. are very important. I also have no thyroid and have been thru menopause with no hormone treatment. You are loosing 10 lb. a month which is not bad. Keep up what you are doing and give your body some time to adjust. It's been thru a lot. I also have hots and colds not sure why . You are doing GREAT just hang in there. 😃

As you lose weight a lot of hormones, etc. are released into your body that were stored in your fat which can cause issues. For me, the oestrogen that was released stopped my menopause symptoms (they came back when I reached my goal weight unfortunately) & my cholesterol levels rose very quickly (back to the level it was pre surgery now). My general liver function was off too. My GP & surgeon were concerned & I was having monthly blood tests & scans. It was my dietician who explained what was happening & that things would settle when I reached my goal which they did. I was still glad I had all the tests though - better safe than sorry.

This could be what’s happening to you too. It’s worth discussing with your endocrinologist. Hope they find a answer soon.

PS - feeling cold is very common as you lose weight. All that insulation is disappearing. I almost need to wear thermals to go grocery shopping in the middle of summer.

It has hit me today, as I sit in my chair at work that I don't have my belly sticking out to where it would hit the desk. Oh and I can cross my legs more comfortably. It amazes me just how much I have loss in inches vs actual pounds, I have lost 24 lbs all together. But I believe in inches all over about 3 inches. I am noticing more energy and have pep to my step. My skin is a lot clearer. My watch band is shorter by 3 notches. the little things are what I am noticing. When I bend over I don't feel out of breath or I am going to fall over ( weeble wobble).
I am having a hard time with my sweet tooth, it is very hard to not want to get some ice cream or chocolate. Candy I can do without. I have no craving really for that, just chocolate and ice cream. I have gone as far as taking Popsicle and putting them in my mixer with almond milk and making like ice cream with that/ sometimes I have added un-flavored protein powder.
I feel better everyday. The energy is great to have with having younger kids and being able to have the energy to keep up. 😃

If anyone has any advice on how to make your stomach feel better after you eat something you shouldn't have or at too fast, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! It's painful on both sides of my abdomen (like to the point I'm doubled over and using a hot water bottle in addition to medicine) and I'm really nauseous (the thought or smell of food is 🤢).
