Caring for children post op

Recommended Posts

Hello! I have a sleeve procedure scheduled in November and won’t be able to have anyone help with my littles, I know no heavy lifting is important after surgery and luckily my toddlers are very self sufficient in their large motor skills and moving around. I’m just wondering if anyone has any wisdom or stories about caring for children post op as I am having anxiety over if I will be able to do it!

How old are the kids? Will you have to lift them into a car seat or booster seat? In/out of the tub? Will they need a loving lifting hug? I watch my two grandchildren often and wasn't able to help with several of the above items and couldn't do anything with the infant.

The ages are 2,2,7 I do feel like the hardest part will be not being able to lift them into a hug so I am thinking I will just need to sit and snuggle them. I believe we will be able to avoid car rides for awhile and they are no longer in cribs so as long as I can sit when they are having hugs I think I will be okay with not lifting them, hoping sitting and hugging them will be loving enough so they don’t feel rejected from not picking them up. Thank you for your input I appreciate it!

I had surgery in June and have a 4 and 6 year old. I was lucky my husband was home but I didn’t need any major help. My biggest issue was fatigue and I took a nap every afternoon for the first week while he supervised them.

Nope u going to need some help incisions etc i dont have any children right now but i did awhile ago lol. Look those incisions for most of us it was painful to go from sit to stand to give u an idea. You are told a max weight u can lift but in my opinion have family /friends come for like 2-4 weeks. Better still one that also cooks lol

I have 3 boys aged 6, 4, and 21 months. I have tried as often as possible to avoid lifting them, but the little one needs to go in and out of his crib and the tub and car seats. The older ones I explained everything to and for the most part they are being good about it, not jumping and climbing on me anymore, being more careful about hugs. The littler guy is a bit trickier and like I said there are times when I just have to do it. In those cases I try to brace myself as best as I can and keep it short so I don't strain anything too badly.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
