Lab test done year plus after surgery - delay due to covid

Recommended Posts

My bypass was Feb. 2019. I had labs done at 4 months and 9 months post (Dec. 2019). My surgeon is pretty lax and just mentioned having labs done annually unless there's an issue that needs closer monitoring. In Dec my Vit B was crazy high but I have read that's normal from the high dose Vitamins. He had mentioned doing labs again this summer.

I take a Pro Care Vitamin daily and now they have less Vit B (still crazy high amount) so I am curious if my numbers are closer to a normal range but I am not having any obvious issues and am religious about taking my vitamin.

So my question is do I go ahead and have labs done now since it's only been 7 months from the last labs and repeat next summer or do I wait? I really don't want to go into a lab where they have people getting tested for Covid. I don't know if I should just do it now or wait until December when it's been a full year but will still have people getting tested for Covid.

Mmmm? You pose any interesting question. I have blood work done about every 3 months. (Just had one yesterday for my surgeon’s appointment next week.) My GP orders some when I visit her & my surgeon when I visit him. They were watching my liver function for a while so I’m not sure if that was the motivation or if it’s the usual practice. (I am fortunate that my GP & surgeon & his team work well together.)

I would have thought you would have regular tests because of your bypass & because your Vitamin B levels were so high. You can always ask your GP for a blood test if you are concerned that the time between tests is too long.

I had mine done every three months the first year post-op, and annually after that. Occasionally something is headed in the wrong direction, so I have to make an adjustment (add more of this or less of that to my supplementation) and then we re-run that particular test three months later to see if it's improved. I kind of wish we'd just do them every six months, but I guess the current arrangement works. I do get a little concerned something could get way out of whack if we waited a full year, though (as in if it didn't show up during my annual lab work - but then was awful a year later). So far that hasn't happened - but it does cross my mind.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
