Reflux & revision op. after gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

People around & what I have been reading keep suggesting that reflux and sometimes a revision op is the almost inevitable outcome of gastric sleeve ops. I am terribly anxious about this, is it really the case?

not everyone has reflux issues after the sleeve - and in fact, a majority do not. But a significant minority do. It's more likely if you already have reflux going into it. That's why most surgeons recommend you do the bypass if you have issues with reflux, because you're more at risk for having problems with it after VSG. RNY (bypass), on the other hand, often improves - if not outright cures - reflux.

Is there anything we can do to prevent it? Thank you!

I was told by my surgeon (as we discussed my conversion to RNY) that from his experience roughly 1/3 of patient develop GERD after VSG even without prior indications, 1/3 see an improvement of preexisting GERD after VSG & 1/3 remain unchanged (no development or improvement of GERD)

Ask your Surgeon his stats on the subject

no. It has to do with the shape of the sleeve - it causes a high pressure system, or something like that. If you're one of the unfortunate ones this happens to and it's severe, prescription meds may help - or some go for a revision to RNY.

After discussing it with Doc, I am getting the bypass surgery, no reflux issues.

I'm in the same boat. Never had reflux. And now I am post OP 1 yr yesterday and the reflux is so bad. , and the nurse and doctors suggested either the strata or bypass.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
