Nervous about eating...moving to soft foods

Recommended Posts

I just don't want to overdo it. food has always been my joy, my comfort. I worry that I won't be able to stop myself and I don't want to gain back the weight that I have lost so far. So I pretty much eat one meal of soft foods and my other two meals are Slim Fast low carb. I feel in control this way.

Especially being up here at work at night by myself - food has been a major hobby of mine. I can sit and graze for hours sitting in front of my computer in between patrols.

I guess the main thing is that I don't want food to be what I look forward to in my day anymore. Having two meals that are Slim Fast seems to make this easier. It's more of a job to accomplish so that I have energy to do my real job.

Anybody else not wanting to move onto real food?

I think the nervousness will go away once I start having some good restriction, so no - I don't think I'm poisoned for life. LOL I just don't want to spoil this and turn this into "Bandster hell."

I got to start soft foods 4 days after my surgery. I'll admit I was nervous. I have kept the slimfast as part of my daily meals. It's just easier on the days that I have to be at work. I work 3 days a week.

I am also nervous to try anything new on mushies. I seem to be sticking to full liquids rather than mushies. One night I did have fish and green Beans. It was good but I chewed it to death. That should count as part of my exercise! LOL I eat refried beans and mashed potatoes and other than that it is still yogurt, pudding, SF popsicles, juice and broth. I am so scared I will over eat. When I first had the refried beans I did eat too much so I now I am nervous.

Lauri, I had scrambled eggs one morning and they were very good. I only made 1 egg so I couldn't over eat.

I've been on mushies for two weeks and I was nervous, too. Here are some of the things I've been eating:

sugar free pudding made with a scoop of unflavored powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury

sugar free pudding (pre-made)

Soup at Hand

tuna salad and small, soft whole-wheat crackers

soy crisps

Low-Carb SlimFast

refried Beans with melted cheese and cottage cheese or guacamole

scrambled eggs

broth with chicken-flavored Unjury

Laughing Cow spreadable cheese

oatmeal

I'm not supposed to have fruit or fruit juice for two more weeks or I'd be having applesauce. Yogurt is good at this stage, too.

Some of these foods are more of the "soft" variety than "mushie" but I am always sure to chew and chew until they are at least the consistency of pudding by the time I swallow.

I know exactly how you feel. I feel the same. There's now so much variety of foods, and if I can eat Jello or pudding why can't I eat ice cream? It's very hard to resist going back to the old ways, the old habits. I'm scared if I begin, I won't stop and it will be the same old story.

I have been living on Refried Beans and Salsa with cheese and cottage cheese

Scrambled Egs with cheese

Yogurt mized with cottage cheese

Mashed potatoes/w gravy and or cheese

Soup

SF Popcicles

V-8 juice

Water

That is about it, and I have another week of this diet.......then I can graduate to regular diet

I am getting bored with the same thing.....but I will do it I know how important it is.

Oh I amost forgot 2 Protein shakes per day

It is not hard for me because I measure everything I am not to have more than 3 ounces at each meal. I measure tot he T as I was instructed to do by my nutritionist.....She said it is to easy to over eat by eyeballing it.

So I have not overeaten yet.....but I listen to my bodies cues and it will tell you when it is getting that full feeling. At least mine has.

When I feel like I shouldn't have anymore (satiated), I just feel full. When I went too far one time, it HURT. I felt discomfort at the top of my stomach and then stabbing pain at the bottom point of my shoulder blade. I don't ever want to feel that again, so I stick to no more than a cup, period. No matter how good what it is I'm eating tastes.

:girl_hug: Hi all. I can eat about a cup, too. I don't have my first fill for another week, so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to hold, then. I've not had the fear of what to eat, but the first week after surgery I was really down about letting food go. I watched my family eat whatever it was and would wish I could have that. It smelled excellent. Of course, I wasn't the slightest bit hungry. Time has helped, and losing is much more exciting to me now than worrying about that. Diet-wise, my only difference from what's been posted is I do not drink Protein shakes. I use cottage cheese, milk, and scrambled eggs (2) for the majority of my Protein.

I haven't had any pain from eating. Last night, I swallowed two soft-gel supplements, one at a time, waiting in between, and I could feel the second one but it wasn't really pain.

As far as food, I usually start out with what I believe is a reasonable amount and that's all I serve myself. The only question, then, is will I eat all of it? I'm eating so much more slowly than I used to (with a one-minute timer to help me between bites) that I find that I just *feel* like I've had enough. But at the restaurant where I had the fried cheese sticks the other night, there were probably ten to 12 on the plate. I was sharing them with others so I didn't ask to have any removed. However, I used my timer and after each bite, I evaluated whether I felt like I was satisfied. I was especially careful on the fourth one because I felt like I was reaching my limit so I took it very slowly. Amazingly, in the time it took me to eat those four cheese sticks, my husband, daughter and son-in-law had finished their sandwiches and fries!

I also sometimes get a soft hiccup a few minutes after I finish. It feels like an affirmation that I had enough, I guess because I have read on this board that others say that's their way of knowing. If I stop too soon and find myself hungry in an hour or two, I have a sugar-free pudding or a Low-Carb SlimFast but most of the time, that hasn't happened.

Of course, I'm still learning like the rest of y'all! But I'd be thrilled if I never experience any pain or other negative side effects, even if it takes me longer to lose weight.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
