Is it possible that my body isn't keeping electrolytes?? I feel sick daily and my surgeons office can't figure it out ... Is it possible to become dehydrated quickly after bariatric surgery ?

dehydration isn't that uncommon after surgery. Are you able to get all your fluids in?

I don't know about the electrolytes question - not sure what the symptoms would be for that.

I was sleeved in November 2019. And I try to get fluids in but plain Water makes me sick, so I add flavor and that'll usually last about one bottle of water before I start feeling sick on water again.. and I know that being dehydrated can cause many issues and one of them being nauseous because the body is lacking electrolytes. So I wasn't sure if that could be causing it and maybe my body just isn't absorbing much... Idk but I'm miserable

Thank you ! I will get those. I honestly didnt think about the whole dehydration thing.. but considering I had 85% of my stomach removed and can't absorb much , it should've been a thought in my head 🤦🤦🤦

Water is mostly absorbed in your colon, not your stomach, so the reduced size after WLS isn't a big factor. However, in the first few days or weeks, there can be varying amounts of inflammation in the stomach that can prevent fluids from flowing through normally, so we have to be doubly aware of our Fluid consumption and sip, sip, sip water all day long to get enough during that time. But that usually only lasts a few weeks unless there is something wrong with the surgery (such as a stricture) that impedes flow longer term and I would expect your surgeon to find or eliminate that problem fairly quickly. At six months out, hydration shouldn't be a problem, at least not physically.

How much fluid are you getting in per day?

Did they give you nausea meds to take? I used them for at least a month after surgery. I did find when I wasn't drinking enough it made it worse. My office told me I might have been a bit dehydrated which will cause the nausea as well. Try to get as much Fluid as possible. Trust me I know that is not always easy. Keep trying other stuff as well, tea, gatorade, Vitamin Water zero, etc. It could just be the water isn't agreeing with you.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
