Timing drinking and food

Recommended Posts

How long am I limited to 5oz and hour? I’m having a hard time getting in enough liquid a day with being allowed to have purée. According to my dr I’m supposed to wait an hour after drinking to eat, then another hour after eating to drink. I know most of you only have to wait 30 minutes. But what I’m wondering is can I now drink more than 5oz of Water an hour to make sure I get enough for my day totals? Between drinking my Protein, taking my Vitamins, getting in enough liquid and eating purée it’s really hard to time it all out. I know I have the time restrictions with vitamins and protein but my protein makes me so full that I can’t take anything in for a while and it takes me a long time to get it down.

I had my surgery a week before you - and I can definitely drink way more than 5 oz an hour now. I think it's only in that week or two afterwards where things are really swollen and your stomach can only hold 1-2 oz of Fluid. So sure, give it a try to drink more fluid at a time. Just up the amounts slowly and listen to your body for any negative reaction.

Also, personally, restricting drinking 1 hour BEFORE eating sounds like too much. The point of restricting drinking and eating together is to keep the food in your stomach for a while, instead of washing it down into your intestines too quickly. If you have an empty stomach and drink only Water, it's not going to hang out in there for an hour - it will be gone in 15 minutes. So I might ask your surgeon if you can ease up on the drinking before eating restriction - perhaps change it to a half hour instead of an hour.

I had my surgery on 3/13/20, so a week before you like rjan. I am definitely doing more then 5 oz an hour (or so) I am struggling a little with remembering to drink all the time. I agree speak with your surgeon or RD and see about that wait time, I only have to wait 15 minutes after drinking before eating, and to be honest I only been doing 10 as I was mistaken about the time, but all in all I have been fine with eating 10-15 minutes after drinking. I also only have to wait 45 minutes after eating before drinking again. I did download the baritastic app.. it has a timer on it that I find useful to help me keep track of when to eat and drink. Hope this helps!

I want to preface this by saying it’s important to listen to your surgeon’s directions....however we are all different. No two people are going to have the same needs after surgery. I had my surgery on 3/3 and I listened to my body. I needed more liquids than suggested. I can now drink a 20 oz Water within an hour if I feel I need it. My directions were also as many others to wait 30 minutes before and after meals to drink liquids. Which now, that’s not a problem for me as I’ve finally entered the honeymoon phase as they call it, but before the last week I was drinking water and Powerade zero before the 30 minutes.
If your body is telling you that you need more than 5 oz an hour then listen to it.
Out new tummies are tricky to navigate for sure. It will let you know when you are and are not ready for something. I hope you feel better soon.

your body will let you know, when i would drink to soon after eating i would expell the liquid. it wasn't a big deal just a learning curve. I started drinking normally about 5 to 6 weeks out. I do follow the rule of not drinking after eating and waiting at least 30 to 45 minutes. like they said previously every one is differnt.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
