i was also in your shoes a couple weeks ago I made myself so nervous it was crazy!

anyways basically it was a life history from my doc.. she wanted to know EVERYTHING about stuff like

weight loss, what its done to me etc.

family stuff like health and support and a lot about childhood

emotional state.. basically asked about my past sexual abuse, stuff that would lead to emotional eating.

Support- this was a huge one she drilled me to make sure I had a good support system in place.. my hubby going with made a HUGE impact on this part

she also wanted to make sure i knew all about the surgery and what it could and could not do for me.. asked me questions like after the surgery how much can i eat after 2 months 4 months 6 months etc.. (she wanted to know in ounces.)

then it went on to excerise and lifestyle changes making sure i could actually do what needed to be done.

if your married.. be ready to be drilled on your relationship just in case.. I was. But then again I was also told the divorce rate for after surgery is 80%!!!!

She made it very clear i couldnt get any answer wrong that its just a way for her to evaluate my state of mind and if i can handle the surgery. be yourself and dont stretch the truth because then you'd be lying to yourself also and it may be a bad thing when it comes to this surgery

overall it was a very plesant experience and i plan to contact her after the surgery and shes gonna come visit me and my husband in the hospital to make sure all is okay.

the dietician was really scary to me.. all i could think of was how they are "diet" people and are against the surgery.. i got quite the opposite. she was very cool and i learned a lot about the after care and she really explained a lot to me. be ready to tell them everything you eat and how often etc. its pretty extensive also...

atleast mine was! hehe just dont be nervous and make sure you convince them that you know all that you can about the surgery and what *could* happen if things go wrong. that was my biggest view from it is they are trying to make sure you do know.

Good Luck!!

Hi Trish! I (thankfully) didnt have to have a psych. evaluation. I DID have to meet with a dietitian though. My insurance required one or the other; so I chose the other.

I thought the same thing! Like Katerzz said, my dietitian was also very helpful with educating me on eating post-banding. VERY helpful!

Good luck!

Hey Trish. I don't think you will have anything to worry about. Just remember psych. might ask questions about what you know about the band and how it works and how you think it will benefit you. Also has others have said mainly questions on you as a person /childhood/ marriage/weight loss attempts/health problems. I also must say that my psych.was an @$$ and said a few things that I felt were unexceptable about the band but.... I just answered his questions with a smile and figured it would only hurt my evaluation if I got smart back.I DONT THINK HE WAS MUCH ON BAND PROCEDURE Most psych arent there to talk you out of it . They just want to know that you are ready for what your getting into. So my experience just happened to be a little out of the ordinary and I still got a good evaluation and you will too.

Nutritionist was excellent!!! She was very helpful and did not talk Diet talk to me at all . She did ask about weight loss attempts and also what to expect before and after band . What to eat what not to eat 1st 2nd and 3rd food stages. We sat and talked a long time about the procedure and she even told me she felt I had made a good decision having the band . She said she has seen so many people have this done and then come back and see her and she could not believe how much they had changed,mentally/physicaly/ and emotionally. It was a very encouraging visit.

my own eval was quite pleasant and simply focused on a qualified professional observing my decision-making process, and to write an opinion of whether I demonstrated the intellectual capacity to understand what I was proposing to do....

He did make a reasonable effort to gather information about my life-long attempts to control my own weight, and to decide whether this individual (me) in front of him was simply jumping at an ill-advised and illusory bandwagon....ie, did I seem commited for the proper reasons to this surgical option....

This is exactly what I was going to say, and almost exactly how mine went.

I think we owe it to ourselves to be totally honest about our decision to have surgery and how well we understand what we're getting into. I looked at the psych eval as an opportunity FOR ME to examine my own decision as much as for the evaluator to do so. This is not just another hoop to be jumped through. It's important, for everyone.

Trish,

My evaluation was two weeks ago, and I was definately nervous. LOL my best friend told me to ask for a room with extra padding> Hahaha.. But seriously, I found his questions about what I knew about the surgery, before, during and after made me feel that I was truly ready.

That I really knew what I was getting into.

Trish, I know you will do well. Just go in there and be honest and dont be afraid to ask questions. The Psychologist I went to only sees bariatric patients so he was very knowledgable. If you feel comfortable with this person it might be nice to have someone to talk to at some point during your weight loss journey. Besides us LOL...........

Take care and dont worry.....

Trish, I just had the Psych eval., not nutritionist. I used one that my Lapband Dr. works with, as he was familiar w/ WLS and patients. Basically, I filled out a multi-page questionnaire w/multiple choice answers. Then I talked w/the dr. He was very nice, calm. He just wanted to know that I had realistic weight loss goals and that I planned on doing regular exercise, eating appropriately...just basically wanted to know that I understood the band, how it works, and what my responsibility would be. It went very smoothly, and quickly, no stress. He advised that he'd be available if I felt the need to talk w/him after banding. You'll do fine!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
