Once process has started, how long to schedule surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have my first visit with the Weigh Loss Center scheduled for next month. They've verified that my insurance (Health Alliance) covers the procedure and also informed me that I will need 4 visits with a dietitian/nutritionist and at least one with a LSW (mental health). From what I can tell, my insurance company doesn't have the medically supervised weight loss requirement. So, without that, is there any way to know what my timeline for having surgery scheduled should be? Should I still expect to wait 6 months, or do you think it could be sooner?

I'm guessing the four visits with the dietitian are probably your supervised diet requirement - it's just that yours is four months rather than six. It could potentially be a six month weight, though - you're not going for your initial visit until next month, and then after you've finished the requirements, your surgeon's office will submit the paperwork to the insurance company, who typically has 30 days to respond (although many are quicker than that), and then you'll deal with scheduler to schedule your surgery - and sometimes surgeons are booked out a ways. So hope for four or five - but it could easily be longer.

Any delay in my process has ben because of me. I attended the required class in April but changed jobs and needed to accrue leave so I didn’t meet the surgeon until mid September. All my evaluation tests etc were finished right before Christmas. I took a week to decide which surgery I wanted and only waited about 4.5 weeks to hear from insurance. I made a good faith payment and surgery was scheduled for mid March. If you go by when I first met the surgeon, six months. It probably could have gone a bit faster if I wanted it to.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
