So Ready ... But Yet Another Wait

Recommended Posts

Let me start by saying that insurance approved my surgery Tuesday morning. I did a particularly vigorous happy dance around my office, which drew a few stares. My NP said it would take at least 4 weeks because Aetna was behind and my decision came back in 2 business days. Does that mean I was an open and shut case and so obvious that they didn't need to think about it? While I'm thrilled, I'm also a little disconcerted. My team's insurance clearance girl must really know exactly what to say and how to say it.

Now, I'm waiting on my surgeon's office to call to schedule my pre-op visit which is apparently when we'll set "the date".

All in all, I'm excited that the next part of my journey is getting ready to start. Thanks to everyone here on BP who have helped prepare me for it so I'm not too nervous. Love you all! <3

Congrats on getting approved. It's a process not a race. Use this time to get prepared. Insurance companies know that it's cheaper in the long run to pay for these bariatric surgeries up front. It saves them millions long term when we dont get long term complicated health issues like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease etc. Good luck!

That's good that the insurance approval came through so quickly. I think mine took 2 weeks. But my surgeon was already booked out 6 weeks, so I had to wait for her next available date for surgery.

That is kind of what I'm thinking too, @GradyCat. I don't know how far out he's booking, so I'll just have to cool my jets.

You're so right @JB1 that this is all a process. What is one more delay except the opportunity to lose more weight, become more fit, etc?

it seems like it only took two or three days for me to get insurance approval. Then it was about a month before they could get me in for surgery.

I have Aetna and hate them, but I did get my approval in about 5 business days, so that was a welcome surprise.

Woo Hoo on your approval!! I had Aetna too and was freaking out b/c my doctor didn't submit it until 12/14 and my surgery was on the books for 12/18. Approval came in same day it was submitted!!! I guess those billing people really know what to say to get it approved! My guess is that's it's easier if BMI is over 40 and don't need to worry about comorbidities, etc!

So excited for you, and can't wait to follow you on your journey!!!!! XOXO!!!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
