11 month post op bloat, help!

Recommended Posts

I’m 11 months post op, on Sunday I had a small bowl of lentils and rice (I know I know but I’m leaving the country and my mums cooking is amazing so I wanted to try) anyway since then I’ve had the most uncomfortable bloat and burping, it went away for abit yesterday but then came back at night then was gone this morning but came back once I had my Breakfast and coffee. Clearly that rice and lentils created some kind of gas explosion along with huge stress due to planning my move to a different country in a week..but just wondering if anyone has any tips on healing this? So burpy.. bit paranoid it could be a leak but I’ve been informed you’d generally really know if it was a leak and you’d be more than burpy and bloated.. any tips (minus to continue avoiding rice and lentils :p)

Sounds like your microbiome took a big hit with the lentils/rice combo, especially if that's a huge diff from what you've been eating?

Things like anti-gas and Gas-x might help, as might walking. But it kinda sounds like a SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) but I'm not an internet doc nor do I play one here in the forums or on tv. LOL. Why not check in with your doc? I'd maybe in the interim, go to a very bland, low Fiber diet for now. Maybe do some yogurt (unsweetened)?

your system might not be used to all that fiber. It can take awhile to build up a tolerance to it again. I've more-or-less built up a tolerance to it again (I'm 4.5 years out), but I still have occasional days when I overdo it and am miserable!

I can only tolerate about 2 tablespoons of rice even now, but it could be a combo of the two items. Drink lots of extra Water.

Thanks guys, ye I can rarely do rice but usually causes me to be sick not so much bloat.

could it be a leak? Or would the symptoms be worse? It started just after I ate the rice and lentils but could just be a coincidence. I don’t have access to a medical professional currently so it’ll be The emergency room if I must. :(

Lol I keep getting such side eye from my family for my burps 😭😭 it’s like being post surgery again!

😭😭

doesn't sound like a leak. First, they usually occur very early on - and you're almost a year out. Secondly, I just googled the symptoms of leaks. Here they are:

Symptoms of stomach leak include: rapid heart rate, dizziness, shortness of breath, fever, worsening abdominal pain, left chest or shoulder pain, abdominal distention, the appearance of illness and a general feeling that something is very wrong.

I still can't eat certain foods (fried foods) without getting bloaty and full. Tums or Gas-X might help

That happens to me sometimes. I find that lying curled up in a ball helps. Then walking around and marching my legs up and down or walking up stairs helps.

Wish we had gas x in Europe 😂 when I had my surgery and had insane gas pains in my diaphragm, first the doses me up with morphine because my pain was so bad making my blood pressure go up, the realised it was gas pain and just threw a heat pad at me 😂

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
