Revision Surgery Scheduled

Recommended Posts

Is there anyone with a VSG or RNY surgery date at the end of February? My band has been out for about 3 weeks. Feeling good that I made it through the Holidays without gaining any weight. I have been trying to stay within the eating restrictions I had with the band for 14 years. Post op has been much better than expected. I must admit it has been a bit liberating to eat without restriction. I really appreciate the recent posts and comments on the complications with GERDS and acid reflux with VSG. They confirmed our decision to change course from VSG to RNY, because of my history with GERDS and acid reflux with my band. My by-pass surgery is scheduled for the end of February. In the meantime, I have a couple more "boxes" to check off to complete the requirements for Medicare.

I know nothing about the band. I didn't realize you could have it in so long. I thought it was short-term. Good luck with your surgery.

You will love the bypass! With me, when I got full with my band the feeling as 'Yuck! I'm gonna hurl!" And half the time I did slime up some food consistently. Now that my band is out and I have a bypass (I was lucky and was able to get it done in one surgery) the feeling of fullness is the comfortable one I am used to prior to getting my band.

I am also Medicare and I'm a bit nervous. The first bariatric office tried to tell me if you have had one weight loss surgery Medicare wouldn't pay for a second, even if they didn't pay for the first one! So I suffered with my band 6 months longer than I had to, and when I went to a different surgeon the new office said "That's crazy" and guaranteed Medicare would pay for the revision as long as you meet their criteria. I got the surgery 5 weeks ago, and I haven't called the hospital to see if Medicare picked up the tab yet...we'll see...

I was revised on 1 surgery. Life with an RNY is so much easier than with a band. I don’t get stuck and I can eatlots of good healthy foods. I just have to be really careful with sugar but that is a good thing

So different in a good way. I never realized how much I actually vomited with the band. I had mine for 12years. Good luck it's so much nicer to be able to eat without worrying about frothing...

I just got home from my Dr. appointment and am being revised to bypass due to Gerd and erosive esophagitis on Feb 26th. To be quite honest I don't know what I think about this, but he said it would not get better without it. UGH

Traceyringo, My bypass is scheduled Feb 27 in WA. For months, we were sure I would revise to a gastric sleeve. My first appointment my surgeon recommended gastric bypass, but we were set on a sleeve. It wasn't until my pre-op appointment for my band removal, 3 months later, with the surgeon, that he explained the detailed risks of a sleeve given my history. Realizing I might have the same issues or worst with GERDS and acid reflux, we agreed with his recommendation to do a bypass. This site has helped me better understand what I will face with bypass. Honestly, I am comfortable with the decision and looking forward to the surgery.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
