Midodrine for Orthostatic hypotension, side effects?

Recommended Posts

So, after lots of investigation, my heart is fine, and I have orthostatic hypotension. Doctor is suggesting Midodrine as a treatment. For those of you who take it, are there any noticeable side effects? I'm hesitant to take it, and wonder if I can just learn to live with the OH. Thanks!

I take the highest dose three times per day (sometimes less if I am doing alright). The only side effects I had was really strong tingling sensation in my head that would last for like half an hour to an hour after taking it. (Like my head fell asleep like a limb, lol). I've been on it for months now - that sensation still happens occasionally but not as severe. That med has literally been a life saver because I black out constantly if I don't take it.

When I first wake up I stumble with totally black vision to the door way and then have to hang onto it for a few moments. Sometimes when I get up from the sofa my legs get weak and I have to sit down on the floor. Without this med, my life would suck. lol.

Thanks, mousecat88. Glad you're doing better on the med. Do you know why you get orthostatic hypotension? Is it from rapid weight loss?

I assume so. The bariatric office said it just happens to some bariatric patients. The surgery messes with your autonomic nervous system and your body just forgets how to properly regulate blood pressure. I developed it 4 months post-op. They don't know if it will ever resolve itself or not.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
