What to have on hand post surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello-I am scheduled for surgery December 8 and I'm wondering what you all would recommend having on hand for when I get home. I don't want to overbuy shakes or Protein Powder as I know tastes change, but I don't necessarily want my husband to have to run to the store right away. So, what do you recommend?

For me it was helpful to have everything I needed. I got all my prescriptions before my surgery and I had a ton of different Protein Shakes and powders ready to go.

Do not overthink it - All you need is a place to chill and you will be eating liquids so i say just a little broth and Soups =

I do not overstock on Protein, Kinda gets a funky taste after a month or so

Just get ready to chill and watch Tv and relax, food will be the least of your concerns you are done with FOOD and getting healthy

As a male my view

1. Comfortable clothes

2. Net Flix, Prime Video, and other things to occupy your time - I used games like clash of clans and x box to pass the time. To old to be good but passed the time

3. Clean sterile environment - You just had surgery so really do a deep clean prior, Plus coming home to a clean fresh home makes you feel good

4. Water, and broth and maybe a few Protein Drinks -

5. Take this time to educate your self on how to make these shakes, what you will be going thru, and My #! thing to learn Vitamins and Minerals and supplements.

6. Mental Prep - Do not be an idiot like me and crash - See my long post - Be ready and be educated and prepared, Many here have crashed and burned including me during post OP - Be prepared and educated ..This site has all the support and answers.

7. Your love life ends for a short period so get that out of the way also, So no frustrated WLS patients

I had a binder and a tiny but firm pillow (6"x 6" or so) to press against the incision that hurts the most. It's helpful for when you cough or laugh.

A Water container (no straws!) to sip from.

Fluffy pillows to be the most comfortable.

A grabber. Bending will be hard the first week or so.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
