What happens if you get the flu?

Recommended Posts

I'm not getting banded until January. But, I just had a stomach virus which brought up the question what if I had already been banded? There was alot of vommiting involved (sorry for TMI) and it really scared me to think about what happens with the band in place. Would it dislodge the band? Cause choking? Has anyone had experience with this?

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I was sick like this, so I don't expect it to be a frequent issue, just curious and trying to answer all the questions pre-surgery.

Thanks,

Stephanie

Yep, was banded in June and already have gotten the flu and pneumonia....

nah, won't hurt the band and that's because when anyone gets sick...they stop eating or decrease it alot. There won't be anything to throw up.

That said...PUSH FLUIDS until you do throw up!!!!

No kidding. What I've gathered from others is lack of hydration means a tighter band, more restriction.

When you stop fluids, you get so tight that you can foam up...when this was happening to me I drank tons of fluids and if it spewed...it spewed. After a day of this forcing fluids, my band got loser...

weird, huh? But this is what happened.

So keep the fluids going!

I would think since theres a chance of damaging the band any frequent vomiting would be a good reason for your doc to perscribe meds to avoid this? Or suggest something over the counter maybe?

Its a good question to ask your surgeon though for sure.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
