11 weeks post op still can't eat much

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure it's normal but that doesn't make it any less frustrating. Vegetables hurt my stomach, turkey or chicken hurt, pretty much anything I eat. Any suggestions?

Are the veggies well cooked, or are you trying to eat them raw? Poultry dry? That'll hurt. I'm 7 months post bypass and still pretty much on soft food! My advice is to chew really really well, and use something to "lube" the meat. Cook veghies well, and take small bites. Good luck.

Definitely not eating too much. I barely get 4-5 bites in. I'm chewing until it's mush (at least 25 times) and the veggies are cooked.

I am almost 3 months post-surgery. My diet is still a Protein Drink for Breakfast, 4 oz of cottage cheese lunch and 4 oz of Protein for dinner. On occasion, if my hubby is having veggies I take a teaspoon, but to get the protein in I stick to meat first. I do a lot of tuna, the chicken must be shredded I did prime rib last week, but it cut like butter. Oh, pork roast and beef roast it must be tender and shredded. I bought from Amazon a stainless toddler set of flatware so my bites are small small small. I don't eat often at the table as I eat too fast. A 4oz "dinner" of chicken should take about 20-30 minutes to eat so you need to chew a lot. I am not in a hurry to do a "typical" meal just take it easy. My doctor said your meal will be 1/3 of a cup for a long while. You may be trying to eat too much too fast. Focus on getting 60g. of protein and don't worry about veggies. Try taking tiny bites and chewing longer. I am just taking my time adding a bit at a time but still focused on the Proteins.

I Think Protein Drinks are a great idea to get the best protein in and to hit those goals you need :)

It usually takes me 30 minutes or more to eat. I will try shredding the meat. I'm just at the point where I'm sick of chicken and definitely sick of Protein Shakes. I can't do tuna it made me very sick.

I do the tuna in packets with flavoring, it doesn't taste like tuna. Also, I buy Salmon patties. Any meat shredded if eaten very slowly will work. Skip the veggies you need to focus on Protein. Tomorrow we are doing beef stew. I might have a piece of potato mashed, but I will be eating meat only.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
