Anybody NOT need an endoscopy before WLS?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I went to my consultation appointment with the NP Oct 3, PCP for sign off Oct 14, and nutrition consult Oct 8. Originally I wanted a sleeve, but the NP talked me into a RNY. I was told that I have 1 more nutrition class scheduled Oct 31 and a psych consult Nov 8 to complete before I schedule an appointment with my surgeon. I’m surprised that an endoscopy and sleep consult were not included in the pre-requisites to the meeting with the surgeon. I don’t have sleep problems and I don’t have GERD, so I’m wondering if requirements have changed... or will the doctor order these things when I meet with him in November. Anyone have any idea what I should expect?

I kept seeing people talk about having one done before surgery and wondered too if I would need one, but my doctor didn’t require me to have it or the sleep study before my surgery which is next week. I think if you have had bad GERD in the past or other GI issues then they would want it.

My husband had both of those things done before he had surgery last September. I started going in august this year and was told that i did not need those things. I think it all depends on your insurance company.

I don't need either a sleep study or an endoscopy but I already have two comorbidities (HBP and diabetes) so I guess they didn't have to find anything else wrong to do the surgery.

Never heard of anyone before that Did Not require an endoscopy, if for no other reason than to make sure your gastrointestinal tract is normal enough to withstand all the rearranging WLS entails. What if your intestines coil the wrong direction or another anomaly? Surgery is a horrid time to find out these surprises- but I guess doctors and insurances don't all require the same things- don't it just make Life Interesting for Us All?

I did not have an endoscopy before RNY. I had one about 2 yrs before along with my colonoscopy so I don't know if that made a difference. I told the doctor I had gerd and had been treated by GI doc.

No, I didn't need one. Don't know why you would? They did require all patients to have a sleep study since "we" are more prone to sleep apnea, but I had had one done 2 years prior so they waived that requirement for me.

I’m a VCU girl myself. But I won’t hold that against you! Lol!

My surgical group required an endoscopy. I didn't need the sleep study since I already know I have apnea and have my CPAP. I had the H Pylori test, blood work, EKG and chest XRay as well (and a breathing test, since I have asthma. Every group is different. I was like, bring on the tests, whatever makes it safer. The Endoscopy showed I have no hernias, tumors and all that, so I'm happy to have had it. I'm sure, if you wanted, you could ask to have one to check, just to be on the safe side.

I did not have an endoscopy before RNY, but already had documented GERD. An endoscopy wouldn't have told them anything they didn't already know.

I didnt have one. Just blood work and an ekg but that was it. I went to kaiser perm.

Same here, I didn't have one. I'm also Kaiser. I don't have sleep apnea or GERD either. Just labs and the other prerequisites, I have met the surgeon (September) get my surgery date in November as I wanted to have my surgery in January.

No sleep study or upper GI required for me- but I did give them a TON of blood yesterday. Holy Moly I thought I would never get out of that chair!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
