Is it true that your body gets used to a low cal diet?

Recommended Posts

So lately i haven't been eating as much in terms of calories and I'm absolutely fine with it. I'm not really hungry,Ii feel like i'm satisfied, and best of all i'm consistently losing weight! However, I keep reading these things about people saying that if you're eating very little calories to lose weight, you're body will get used to it and when you start eating more calories (although still low enough to be in a deficit and lose weight / or maintain) you'll actually end up gaining weight because you're body will think that you're in a surplus. This is scaring the heck out of me. Is it even true? Any ideas? And if it's actually true, WTH do I do now??!!! 😰

If you are consuming less calories than you expend you lose weight

If consumption and amount expent are equal you will maintain

If you consume more than you expend you will gain.

However it is possible that your body may become efficient at operating on a low number of calories . You may find that your metabolism is not as efficient as when you were younger. Plus as you lose weight your body needs less than when you were bigger so you may find that you will always need to be very careful of amounts consumed .

I wouldn’t let someone’s post scare you. Keep working your plan.

Is it true? The scenario you posted is not true for me. I lose weight when I stay within my weight loss calories. First months 500 to 900. Eventually went to 1100 and still lost all my weight.

I've been on my own preop diet no more than 1000 calories a day and losing very consistently unless I go too low so I try to keep between 800-1000 most days :)

I assume after surgery the calorie intake will be much less due to new pouch and I guess the new "plumbing" changes the way your metabolism works :)

I've done well So far 50lbs down IN 6 weeks I hope to continue losing steadily after surgery RNY!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
