Liver problems 1 year after Sleeve

Recommended Posts

My daughter is one year out of gastric sleeve surgery. She has done very well but in the last couple weeks she has been experiencing very high liver enzyme’s and Billiruben in her urine. She is in the hospital right now and they have ruled out Hepatitis. They do not seem to be paying much attention to the fact that she has had gastric sleeve. She only drinks alcohol socially. And she is only 24.Has anyone heard of this complication a year after surgery or more?

This article discusses a very rare and extreme example of liver disease post-op (this patient died of a hospital infection, and not from anything related to her liver disease, btw). This may not be relevant to your daughter's case, but I'm sharing it in case you want to bring it to the doctors' attention.

It's also a wake-up call for me because one of the reason's I'm getting VSG is to be an eligible liver or kidney donor for my sister.

It's a reminder to us all that we must be diligent about taking Vitamins.

That is a good article. If we think about it, rapid weight loss, particularly with the morbidly obese, requires that the body process and remove materials left from the broken down fat..... and it happens through the liver. OK, I am not a scientist, obviously. I see that the article sites patients with very high BMIs as being vulnerable.

I sure hope that Laura's daughter will be OK. This is an important article to show the people at the hospital.

I had liver problems most likely from chronic gallbladder issues. Small stones passing through the common duct. They never could find out for sure, but the problem resolved after gallbladder removal and my liver biopsy came back good.

Edit- it took about 3 months for bilirubin and liver enzymes to return to normal.

I had gallbladder issues 6 months after surgery which was causing liver problems

apparently gallbladder issues are so common after WLS they should remove the gallbladder the same time as the WLS

I was part of a research study, while on a medically supervised weight loss program with Optifast. this was in the 1990s, long before I had bariatric surgery. It is not the surgery that causes the problem. It is the rapid weightloss. People who loose large amounts of fat, over a relatively short period of time, can have complications with gallbladders. So, it could be prudent to remove it while having weight loss surgery to avoid having to have another surgery.

How is your daughter doing now? Did they figure it out?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
