Have you been shopping for new clothes?

Wow - my self image is really screwed up right now. Around 40 lbs is the most I’ve ever lost at one time and I’m well past that now. It feels good!!

I work from home so I have been able to put off buying new clothes.

I finally broke down today and bought 3 pairs of pants and a few tops. I had to go back to the rack twice for smaller sizes in the pants. Looking at the 20's I was trying on, I was thinking "there's no way these are going to fit"!

I was having a REALLY hard time seeing my weight loss and then last 10lbs has been a really shocking change (to me).

What have you guys been doing about clothes?

I was down to 250 a scant five years ago and got rid of everything bigger than a 22......so, for 5 years I've been accumulating clothes up to the 28s I was lapsing into this time last year! So, I'm good for another 25 lbs, pro'bly.

All I've bought so far are some smaller camis and tanks to go under jackets and shirts and only really because the ones I have are showing their age, not because I didn't have any.

But sometimes I just get a real bad ITCH to buy something NEW -- when I do, I just dig through a box in the closet or a Rubbermaid bin in the garage until I find something I'd forgotten I had. I just don't want to spend $$ NOW -- when I don't HAVE TO. So there'll be more $$ to spend when I do!

Nana<----wearing 22s and smallish 24s now, the 26s and 28s are goin' bye-bye!

I've had to break down and buy a few basics lately. I bought a pair of jeans and a pair of black slacks and a couple of tops. I love, love, love clothes and could go crazy shopping, but I'm forcing myself to show some self control. I hope to keep on dropping about a size a month, so it makes no sense to invest much in clothes now. I just bought 18s (thrilling) and when I get to a size 12 there may be no stopping me. I can't even remember the last time I wore a 12 but I can hardly wait. Who knows, maybe I could even be a 10 eventually. I'm 5'9 and really can't even imagine what I will look like at goal weight.

Hi Candle,

I have.

I know that the new clothing I just purchased will probably not fit me in a few months, but my former wardrobe was getting to the point to where it was looking absolutely ridiculous on me.

During a recent trip to San Antonio, I was able to find some great items on sale, and (hopefully) what I bought will do me for a few months. Accessorizing with scarves, wraps and jewelry is giving me different looks so that I can get by with fewer outfits for the time being.

Also after years of yo-yo dieting, I have just about every size imagainable in my closet -- so, I am joyfully rediscovering some of my older clothing, some worn for only a nanosecond while I was on the way up (or down), and even a few pieces with the price tags still on.

That's me!!! Found a really cute top the other day that will do nicely for Christmas parties with just the right skirt. Rather than torture and tempt myself shopping for it -- cause we all know how the search for that one perfect item can be -- I'm bought fabric and a pattern and am going to make it. AND I'm making it so I can wear it for several sizes -- it should take me through all the winter.

That brings me to another question -- and I wanted to get your opinion...

The clothes that are too big, some we hate, but a few we love...

  • Do you get them tailored so you can wear them a little longer?
  • Do we go ahead and pass them on (to a friend, to Goodwill, eBay, etc?) so some other large gal can get some use out of those larger sizes??

Hi Nana,

Once I get to goal (which is quite some time down the road yet), I plan to have a few of my favorite classic, basic, pieces tailored down. The majority of my larger-sized clothing however, will be passed on..............

Nana - I've recently donated a bunch of clothes to Goodwill, thrown out some, and have some listed on ebay currently. Getting things tailored never really occurred to me.

Does anyone know if sizes at The Avenue are off? Earlier in the week I was marveling at getting into size 20 jeans and I then got a pair of 18's at The Ave yesterday!! They are a little tight but still .... I was blown away!!!

Yep....due to years of dieting and a penchant for fashion---I've got an entire attic cedar closet filled with clothes......down to a size 14. A few years back, I gave my 10's& 12's to a friend who was returning to work! Like several of you mentioned---I have clothes with tags on them---great bargains at the end of the season that I could NOT pass up (thinking I'd definitely get into them the following year.....). Most of my clothes are "work" clothes---suits, blazers, skirts, pant suits, blouses, sweaters. So, I'm having a wonderful time re-visiting my Size 16's at the moment. But, I do plan to buy a special dressy outfit for my husband's business Christmas party. I am even taking this coming Friday off to do just that!!!!

Look out Coldwater Creek....here I come!!!!!

Candle, I think we must have bought the same pants at Avenue! I'm wearing my 18's from Avenue right now.

In my experience, all their sizes vary a lot. I can wear 18's on the bottom and 14/16's on top in most things but their more fitted items are a size up. At Lane Bryant, I'm a size range up for everything.

Avenue does cater more to the over 24 size range, so that might be part of it (just generally more full-cut size ranges).

I've had to give up on Roaman's entirely now (and no, I'm NOT grieving that loss!).

As for shopping, I generally buy things as tight as I can stand them, so I can wear them longer as I lose. It's a nice shift having to plan for being smaller instead of bigger!!

I have not bought a single item and I really need to. My kids keep saying it looks like I have a load in my butt. I was hoping for more flattering compliments than that along the way so I think it is time to go buy a few pairs of jeans today.

I bought a pair of jeans at Goodwill because I just can't afford to be buying clothes so that they fit. I am down to a very few outfits now that I can wear. A great NSV (and a funny one!) We were moving last week and I could feel that my pants were way to big. Well just as I got into the house from carrying several boxes, my jeans just fell to the floor! My BF and I were laughing so hard. it was a good thing that friction held them up for the last 15 seconds or I could have bared my behind to the entire town! And Fastpitch mom I also look like I have a load in my pants!

Do it Melissa!!

I didn't want to spend the money on new clothes but it was sooo worth it!! I don't think I really realized how big my clothes were getting. Over the weekend, I got compliments from 3 people that don't know about my surgery. (I consider those "real" compliments - lol) My boyfriend said it was not only because my weight loss is significant but because I was actually wearing clothes that fit - lol!

It looks like BRAS are going to be the first thing I'm going to have to buy! I started about a year ago replacing all of my older ones AND going UP a size, so it's a shame, but the newest ones are going to be the first to go.

I wear front closers so there's no way to tighten them (yes, I know I have a sewing machine, but I'm not gonna go there!) and there's enough play in them now (guess I'm losing back fat! YAY!) that sometimes when I take off my top, half or more of the hooks are undone!

So, if my 46s are too big, I wonder if I should by a 44 or just squeeze into a 42 for now...?

Bras were the first that I actually HAD to buy. I am big on the top (thanks to genetics on BOTH sides of the family!) and it was just getting uncomfortable. I went with bras that were too small around and within 2 weeks they were fitting just like they were supposed to. So Nana, if you think that you can stand going to tight, I would suggest doing that, especially if you are finding that clothes are consistantly getting bigger. I am trying to buy my brother's house from him since he was naughty and did get the bill paid on time every month so if that goes through I will actually be able to pay for some new clothes. I am buying the house for more that he owes on it so that we can get some cash out. Then he is going to pay off my surgery and I can stop sending him 500$ a month, so even with a mortgage payment I will be saving a whole lot of money! Mini shopping spree here I come. (I say that, but I am such a penny pincher that it probably will not happen). However I do NEED some long sleeve work shirts. It is down into the teens every morning now and I go to work at 5:00AM. Well gotta finish grading test. Have a good day.

Hello All,

Bra's were my first purchase! I use my bra for holding money and even my cell phone. I put my phone in my bra the other day and it fell right through!:) I can no longer wear my 22 and 24 pants! I aint complainin. Like most, I have pants in sizes down to an 18 so I'm ok for a awhile. I am going to wait until the after Christmas sales to buy a few things and I am buying 18s. I figure they should take me through february and March with thermals. I am sure by spring, I'll have to plan a SHOPPING SPREE :whoo:for the summer! I can't imagine buying clothes in a size 14 but I'm hoping to be there by this summer! I'm so glad I did this! To think that 14's and, dare I say, 12s are a real possibility!

Take care!

Val

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
