Heartburn post sleeve

Recommended Posts

Pre-surgery I was prescribed Pantoprazole by the gastroenterologist who did my endoscopy. I kept taking it through surgery and recovery. (I'm not almost 4 months post-op)

Anyhow, even though I was still mindlessly taking the Pantoprazole, I assumed my heartburn had gone away because now I eat nothing compared to what I ate pre-surgery. But once my Pantoprazole ran out, I started getting heartburn again like the old days.

Anyone else experience this? Will I have to take Pantoprazole for the rest of my life?

I understand why I had frequent heartburn when I was 400 pounds and ate everything that wasn't nailed down but I'm confused about why I still have heartburn now post-op.

Any advice is really appreciated. Thank you!

Are there certain foods that are making this happen? Do you journal so you can try and correlate the type of food with the issues? I am 4 months post op and I finished my Pantoprazole a month ago and haven't had any issues, but then again, I'm eating so much better now than I had presurgery. Just curious if you have notices if there's specific things that set you off.

I've had the experience that you expected. I had GERD and took Omeprazole for years. Now ever since WLS I no longer have GERD or heartburn and don't need it anymore and haven't taken it for 7 months.

Thanks. Heartburn seems to have started once I stopped taking the Pantoprazole. So now I don't know if its just been masking my heartburn all along or if its something else. I haven't started eating anything differently than what I've been eating ever since the operation.

I have Gerd and it was immediate after surgery. I halved the dose of my PPI 6 weeks ago and am hoping to be able to get off of it. I have read that a BMI of 25 or less can help with getting rid of Gerd .

That's awesome yours went away!! I was looking into the sleeve, but after doing some research and talking to my Dr it looks like bypass is my best option. I've heard/read that the sleeve can make GERD much worse.

Keep up the amazing work on your journey.

i had the worst type of heartburn/ gerd for years took nexium for years everyday for it. would always wake up clearing my throat coughing due to reflex that came up when i was sleeping..but after the sleeve and significant weight loss plus the addition of a adjustable bed so my head is way above my stomach has helped that i stopped taking my nexium..

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
