I give up on protein :(

I am 11 days post-op. I cannot tolerate Protein substitutes. I’ve tried everything and all of it makes me sick. Even Genepro... I can smell it, taste it, it gives me horrible gas & makes me nauseous.

I’ve only averaged around 30g of Protein a day since surgery. Yesterday I had to get IV fluids for dehydration because the Protein makes me so sick. I can drink Water just fine until I start trying to get my protein in. Staying hydrated needs to be my priority right now & the protein is affecting my ability to do that.

So what are the consequences of not getting enough protein at this point? I’m starting soft foods next week & I feel like it will be easier to get my protein from food as time goes on.

Other than the protein issue I’m starting to feel semi-normal again. Most of my pain has subsided & I feel like I have a lot of energy today.

Can you tolerate regular broth Soup? My RD said to put your protein (unflavored) in a bag and sprinkle it on everything through the day. Once your baggie is empty you have reached your protein goal for the day. The Rds and drs are in conflict as well at my office. The rds said to only get up to 32 g of protein where as the doc wants more like 40-60. They said that’s to much to tolerate so if you were with my practice You are on track. Heck I can only stomach 16g which sucks but I can’t stand protein anymore. Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

Thank you for your recommendations. I’ve actually been using fair life milk & chocolate milk it just doesn’t seem like I can get to the number of Protein that I need since it’s a smaller amount of Protein per serving.

As far as hair and muscle loss... is that something that will happen from just one month of not getting enough protein? Once I’m eating solids if I’m able to get enough protein then will I be good or will I have done a lot of damage?

I think you are over estimating your ability to eat enough protien. It will be a couple of months before you can fit 70-100 grams of protien in throughout the day. I am a month out and i still need a protien drink to make up for what I cant eat.

https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/bariatricpal-15g-protein-shots-pink-lemonade

I got 4 flavors of this in my bariatric pal box & I was hesitant but... I've had the pink lemonade & orange & they're actually really good. They can down the tiny bottle like a shot, but I dump it into a bottle of Water & liked it.

I wasn't as bad off as you my first two weeks with the protein- it didn't make me sick but mentally the taste of most all of it was just gross. I enjoyed the Premier Protein shakes prior - first 2 weeks after I didn't really want to drink them. (Now that I'm farther out they're good again).

I also liked the premier Protein clear drinks prior. I STILL don't want to drink those & now I've got 20 of them piled up in my pantry. Whomp.

Try Bob’s Red Mill whey Protein (Amazon/Whole Foods)... you can mix it in Water or tea or food (eventually)and it really has no extra test, tongue coating or gritty flavor. I’m preparing for my procedure and stocking up on options. I hope you find something that works for you.

I never drank a Protein Shake one. I tried many, but couldn't get past the smell. I drank fairlie milk and high Protein yogurt starting the second week. I'm 4.5 months out and get enough protein from food. Good luck!

I had an issue with nausea after a week and a half. It was awful. I couldn't get anything down. I took acid reducers and that helped a lot. Also, the problem I had, and you may have this as well, was smell. Your sense of smell is super hyped up, so smells can set you off easily. I drank peppermint tea. That really helped calm things down, and it's caffeine free. It can be strong, but it helps with the nausea. I use legion Protein Powder. it's a little expensive, but it's all natural. Most other Protein powders use sucralose, and that can give you nausea as well. When I started out, all i could have was Water, because everything else gave me issues because sucralose is in so much. Anyways, I would make a thinner Protein Shake with lactose free milk and half of a scoop, and it would still give me a good amount of protein. But, yeah, try the peppermint tea, and try to avoid sucralose if you can, and try to take antacids.

Getting your fluids is the biggest priority. Then Protein. I boost mine up by adding unflavored protein powder to Greek yoghurt and Soups. Once you start the soft/pureed stage, you should be able to add it and not even notice it, but go slowly so you don't get nausea. As far as Hair loss, I believe it is related to the absolute starvation stage you are in now. Even those of us who got all our protein from the get go have hair loss. The hair follicles just shut down. Once the new hair starts growing, it pushes the old dead hair out. That's why the hair loss starts around 3-4 months - because by they you are getting enough nutrition to actually start growing hair again. When it happens, just think, "Out with the old, in with the new!"

Did you doctor give you a prescription for Zofran to help with nausea? Zofran won't stop nausea once it starts, but can prevent it is you take it 20 min BEFORE you try to eat.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
