Feel like I'm taking 10 steps back

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I had my r n y on May 22nd and was discharged the very next day. Everything was going well just the minimum pulling at the incision sites and soreness. About two weeks after surgery I woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain in my stomach and then began throwing up it scared me so bad because I was so worried about tearing something inside and my doctor is in San Antonio Texas miles away from here in Mississippi. I was just at the point of soft foods and was tolerating scrambled eggs and refried Beans and yogurt. But slowly I am now not able to tolerate anything but liquids. I get this ball feeling in my chest like something is stuck a rock and it sliding up and down and then shortly after that I start throwing up. It's not food it's a very thick mucus. I have developed a severe UTI and was prescribed an antibiotic in liquid form but I can't even keep that down. The doctor said there is narrowing at a certain point after the surgery where the stomach connects to the small intestines and he said within a week or two it should dilate itself. Has anyone else experienced this? I sure hope it goes away.

Sorry for what you are experiencing. Your surgeon is in San Antonio Texas. Is there someone local that you can get a second opinion with?

I will be seeing my pcp on Monday but if this doesn't get better the surgeon said they will get me in to see a gastro Dr here.

sounds like a stricture. I had two of them - one at four weeks out and one at eight weeks out. And yes - they dilate them - it's an easy fix. You should feel better right away.

I agree with catwoman7. I have had a stricture for months. I had the same symptoms. I've been dilated 4 times with a 5th one coming ip at the end of the month. Did you have RNY? It's a long road to recovery. But it is possible. You need to find a bariatric surgeon near you and get this diagnosed. They do an upper GI to diagnose a stricture. Keep us posted. And good luck!

oh wow - sorry you had such a rough time with it. USUALLY strictures are pretty minor and the fix is easy. I didn't have any further problems after the two dilations.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
