10 years out and Almost back to pre-op weight

Recommended Posts

I’m 10 years out from having a gastric sleeve and I’m close to my pre-op weight. I am so frustrated and disappointed with myself. I guess I stretched my stomach out. Is there anyone out there with this problem ?

It may not be stretched it may be what and when you eat. If your diet contains a lot of sliders instead of Protein and if you graze then that would be the issue.

Try going back to basics. Only eating at appropriate meal times. Making sure that you eat off a small plate. Half a plate of protein then the other half should be mainly low carb veg with a tiny portion of high carb foods if you are still hungry. Eat slowly, don’t drink with your meals etc and see if that makes a difference.

I agree with the above poster. I doubt you've stretched your stomach - you've just let bad habits sneak back in. Your tool should still work. Just go back to what you were doing that first year post-op - dense Protein first, then non-starchy vegetables, and then, if you have room, a small serving of fruit or healthy carbs - like whole grains. No drinking after eating. Eat at meals only - or perhaps have a planned snack or two - but no grazing. Measure/weigh and log your food. You know the drill. It's a pain, but I still do it at four years out, and I know I'll have to keep doing it the rest of my life or my weight will come back.

You probably can just go back to the basics of weighing and measuring things, cutting calories, focusing on Protein, and getting in your Water and you'll start losing again.

Many have come back and posted after weight regain. You are not alone. Your options are to have a surgery revision or Get back on track.

The only way to know if you stretched your sleeve is to have it diagnosed by a surgeon. Many sleeves have less restriction years out, but our stomachs are not back to full size. I can hold more food volume. I had to find strategies to fill the extra space and satisfy hunger with out regain.

Many people confuse grazing/ eating around your surgery with stretching.

Grazing is eating many small meals healthy or unhealthy choices that total over your weight loss/maintaining calories. When you eat small meals, you don’t feel your surgery restriction. The calories quickly add up and you will gain weight.

When you eat around your surgery the sleeve will no longer works. If you get back to basics and control what you eat again, you can start losing weight. Getting back to basics and finding the right mindset and discipline is not as easy as it sounds years out. I would suggest getting a counselor and dietician to support you through all this.

Bariatric Basics. Eat your bariatric real food plan - Weigh your food on a scale, log your food in a food app,(my fitness pal or baritastic) drink a minimum of 64 oz of Water, exercise.

**stay within your weight loss calories and macros ** You can ask a dietician for a meal plan and calorie range. Other people here that are years out are willing to share their plans.

I'm five years out with the sleeve. Some do the pouch reset suggested above. Some find it too restrictive. Real food plan can be more satisfying.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
