Waking up choking

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had problems choking on pouch(?) contents? Even when I sleep sitting up with pillows there are times when I wake up feeling the 'stuff' trying to get into my nasal passages. I've been banded for just over a year now, and this has been only going on for the last couple months, but is getting worse all the time.

L&D,

It sounds like you're getting reflux which may be causing you to aspirate in the middle of the night... it's happened to me too--no fun! Call your doctor ASAP and tell him what's going on. A tiny unfill could fix the problem.

In the meantime, try not to eat for at least 2-3 hours before bedtime.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I had the same thing. I stopped eating a good 4 hours before bed time which helped. I was always on an acid reducer even before surgery. Prilosec OTC has helped me. Protonix was even better but my HMO discontinued it. Cheap bastards. Good luck!

It's bandster reflux. It probably will not be solved by antacids. I tried everything under the sun until it was so bad I had to have my band completed emptied. Unfortunately I've never been able to get back to my "ideal" level of restriction without reflux so I've compromised on mild/moderate restriction with no reflux.

I'ts NEVER something to let linger--tell your doctor. Get treatment. Self-treating may lead to irreversible dilitation or slippage.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
