My BMI is 36.3 however I don’t have any other health issues. My height is 5’6 my weight is 225. Do you think they will allow me to have surgery? I have my seminar next week.

Are you looking for insurance to cover it, or will you be self-pay? Most, but not all insurance carriers require a BMI of 40 with no comorbidities or a BMI of 35 with 2 comorbidities. All carriers are different though. Can you call insurance and ask??

Are you certain you don't have any co-morbidities? If you snore, you could have sleep apnea. How's your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar? Do you have joint pain such as arthritis? Decreased mobility? There are a lof of co-morbidities. I don't think there is any insurance company in the US that will pay for WLS unless you have

  1. BMI greater than 40 without any co-morbidity OR
  2. BMI greater than 35 with at least 1 co-morbidity related to obesity, some require multiple co-morbids.

If you are self-pay, you MAY be able to find a surgeon in the US who will do it, I know mine will NOT do WLS unless you meet one of the two above criteria.

I do know of people who have gone to MX to have WLS done who didn't meet insurance or surgeon criteria here.

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
