Post-op Weight Gain

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I’m new to this site and just had surgery on 2/27. I was wondering if any ladies who have had their surgery experienced weight gain right after surgery? The morning of my surgery they weighed me and 2 1/2 days later when I was discharged, they weighed me again and I was 11 lbs. heavier. I understand bloating but have never been so bloated that I gained that much more weight. So just curious if anyone else had a similar experience.

Same here. It was the i.v. fluids. They give you a lot. I think even while you are in surgery they are pumping fluids into you. It does go down soon enough.

Same thing everybody else has said - i.v. fluids from the hospital stay. Your body will figure everything out in a few days and you'll normalize.

Same as what everyone said. All I want to add is don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t start coming off in just days. I came home 12 lbs heavier and I swear that scale hardly budged for the first two weeks. You’re swollen and your body is healing. It WILL normalize in it’s own time and you will start to see some progress on the scale. If you haven’t already I’d take your measurements. Even when the scale isn’t moving the inches are coming off. You’ve got this 👍🏻

I found it ironic that I lost 9 lbs with my 2 week pre-op diet and gained exactly 9 lbs in the hospital in less than 24 hrs! I lost that plus 3 more the first week post op. It's normal.

Thanks all for the reassurances. My only reference is my husband who had the same surgery 10 months ago and did not have this issue. So then I thought perhaps it happens mostly in women than men 😂

I'm on Day 3 of the liquid Pre-op diet. Yesterday was a bit rough for a few hours, but today seems to be much better so far. My surgeon told me on Tuesday at my pre-op appointment that the first few days would be the worst and after that I would probably just be bored with consuming the same things everyday.

Same exact thing happened to me! No worries, you will lose it quickly. The past posts are all correct, they're the liquids they pumped in your system. I also gained 11 pounds, wow! Good Luck! One day at a time!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
