I’m just checking to make sure this is correct. After wls we can never or should never have any sodas, or drinks with caffeine in it ? If so what do you guys drink besides Water? The liquids with artificial sweeteners give me indigestion really bad. Any suggestions ?

Natural fruit juice chilled and thinned extremely down to a lo-cal level, watch infused with herbs, or frui t slices like orange, lemon, lime ( I 💞line slices) Decaf green teas, some actually sweat by chilled herbal ones.

I was cleared to drink things with caffeine after 2-3 months (can’t remember exactly when it was).

Around my two month mark I was drinking Water, black coffee (caff and decaf) plain tea (caff and decaf), perrier (plain or lime flavoured) , and the occasional glass of red wine or gin and soda...the alcohol, my nutrionist didn’t like me drinking and said i should wait until one year mark. Im at 3.5 months postop now and Im still drinking all the same stuff except now I’ve reduced the alcohol to more like a couple sips from someone’s glass, maybe once every 2 weeks or so. Oh, and of course Im also drinking protien shakes, I have one almost every day...I make it with chocolate flavoured Protein Powder, water, 1 tsp of instant Decaf coffee & 2 tsp of Benefiber.

I dont drink anything with sugar or added sweeteners or milk (am slightly lactose intolerant)

Deneen, I was told no caffeine for the first year (and ideally never) and no carbonated drinks ever. I was wondering the same thing as you. I'm not sure whether artificial sweeteners are okay or not--does anyone know?

I don’t understand why people are being told no caffeine ever. What is the reason? My team allows caffeine after 2 months. At that point you should be able to drink plenty of fluids to counter the diuretic effect and the incisions should be healed enough to not have irritation.

My team said best to avoid carbonation because it will cause bloating ( won’t stretch your pouch) and can be uncomfortable. But they said you can pour it in a glass of ice and let it set for a while and let the bubbles dissipate.

From the research Ive done, the reason why caffeine should be limited is because it can cause dehydration. I also read somewhere that it increases appetite, but I have never experienced that.

I am allowed coffe but has to be with cream and I am having a hard time with that. I hate cream etc. so I have been drinking more tea. I am not quite 3 weeks post op. I mostly drink Water. If I get tired of plain I use a little flavoring but very little. I don’t like anything that is too sweet. I drink Protein water sometimes too but I have to cut it in half with plain water.

Why can't you live without caffeine or soda? The whole idea is to change your life for the better. There's so much bad stuff in a can of soda including tons of sugar!! I hope it's not hitting your weight loss goals

I was a daily coffee drinker for a long time. I switched to Decaf about a month before surgery, and afterwards, lost my desire for it altogether! Now I enjoy all flavors of herbal tea. Even green tastes sweet to me now - not bitter like before surgery.

I drink broth - Bone Broth has 10 gm Protein per cup. The best is a mixture of beef/chicken/turkey. Or I make my own, which tastes a lot better. Sometimes I drink naturally flavored, unsweetened seltzer Water. I open it up and let it sit overnight to de-fizz.

But my all time favorite is my green water! I have a large vegetable garden, and I am not allowed to eat any of it yet! Bah humbug! My post op instructions said to drink Clear Liquids that do not have calories or caffeine. So I put lots of my garden greens (kale, spinach, turnip greens, broccoli leaves, bok choy, arugula, etc) in my blender with water. I strain the sloppy mixture and then filter it with a coffee filter. I then have a Vitamin rich, tasty (tastes like fresh salad) drink that I sip, add to Soup, and add to my smoothies. My doctor about came unglued at my 2 week appt when she saw it - she thought I was cheating. But I pointed out that it was clear with virtually no calories, and a heck of a lot healthier than Crystal Lite, Diet Jello, or anything with artificial sweetener or colors. Besides, it made me much happier psychologically to be using something from my garden. She agreed it was OK. I make up a bottle of it every few days and keep it in the fridge until ready to use.

Hey ya'll. SO. I got down to 199 for the weigh in but gained it all back right after. I have to do another month of weight management. They switched out the nutritionists at the last second and she said she doesn't pass anyone unless they have 5 veggies a week. I'm starting metformin and Farxiga today. Doc found a little bit of blood in my urine but wasn't too concerned. I'm trying not to freak myself out either. Depression is a little more intense than usual. I'm all over the damn place.

3/19 - It wasn't a bad day I stayed up quite a bit much of the day. Have to focus on walking more before it gets too hot to walk outside at all.   Pain was less, but insomnia has kicked in the last two nights
