Need advice getting started in North Carolina

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am in North Carolina and I have finally made the decision to pursue weightless surgery. My insurance does not cover it, so I will be doing self-pay and paying for it out of my retirement savings. I'm not sure where to start. I googled places that do "weightloss surgery" but I don't know how to get started. How DO you get started? How do you pick a hospital? a surgeon? Since insurance doesn't cover it I don't think being referred is going to be a factor. Looking forward to you all helping me get started and starting the journey.

What surgery are you looking into? Bypass? Sleeve?

I've been looking at this option for a family member that will be self pay. Sounds like fun.

My research was last year. Cary Surgical Center $15K for surgery fees, MD fees and overnight stay (doesn't include preop test, x-rays, 3-4 nutrition appointments etc). Dr. Enochs has a great rep there and had insurance not covered it that is where I would go before even considering price. These prices were also based on no significant co morbidities. Duke was about 22k, and Rex was 27k I think. Cary Surgical just merged with Wake Med and was a lot less before they did last fall. I'm surprised it is still that low. They might be doing it at a surgery center verses a hospital which makes the price sky rocket.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
