To snack in between meals or not to snack

Recommended Posts

My clinical team suggested I have 3 small meals and 3 Snacks. I continue to struggle to get the Protein in. I try to snack on high protein foods such as the chicken Jerky or a Protein Bar. I can't tolerate any of the Protein Drinks anymore. Eventually I would like to get down to 1-2 snacks a day.

Snacking is really not good for us sleevers. It triggers bad habits and grazing. I understand we might only be able to eat 4 or 5 oz during any given meal--and that helps with weight loss. However, if we are going to snack between meals, you can basically eat around your sleeve. You're not exercising discipline and that's NOT good. We want to change our past bad behaviors while we have this great opportunity. Even if you're losing weight with the snacking, that doesn't meant the snacking isn't having a negative impact on your weight loss. You have to also think about how this is going to effect you long term when your sleeve has greater capacity. I say NO snacking between meals.

That said, I sometimes cave and have a snack--it's a tough thing to resist. I do everything I can not to eat it though. I'll make myself a drink comprised of 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 8oz of Water. That usually kicks the cravings to the curb. If am still hungry after that, i'll allow myself a very small snack and track on MyFitnessPal so I stick with my macros and calorie budget.

Never thought about how I could be eating around my sleeve. Scary.

So I was sleeved on 7/23/18. SW:238, Pre op weight 221, CW 162. Goal is 138. I've lost 75 pounds and have been doing good with weight loss.
I recently order a couple cookbooks and I noticed in it said that you should not snack and to only have three small meals a day. The small meals are fine but I mainly snack to get more protien in as I know I don't get enough daily.
Curious what others do. Part of me says I'm doing good bc the scale is moving in the right direction...but the other part of me thinks am I doing something wrong...last thing I want is months down the road to slowly start gaining again. Biggest fear is gaining all the weight bk and looking like a failure......
Advice?

They have me snack, because I can't get all of my Protein in otherwise.

Very hard not snacking as I guess I started to get into a habit. Nipping it in the bud. Have an appt with my surgeon (follow up) today. I’m going to ask him. Going to make an appt w my NUT too.

I plan my intake pretty carefully and given the small amount of food I can eat at a sitting, I have to eat every 3 hours or so to get my calories and Protein in for the day. No way I could hit my targets if I didn't. My program has a calorie goal of 1,200 at this point going forward. I struggle to get to that number even with eating every three hours. I think part of my slowdown in weight loss is just not getting enough calories.

@MarkLewis
I’m at a post op appt w my surgeon and I’m going to ask him about the snacking. Tried to get in with my NUT after this appt (last min) and they couldn’t get me in. So I may have to wait a couple days to get a plan of strategy from my NUT. I was to be successful and I will be successful so I’ve got to get a plan. Mainly my fault for not going to my NUT.

My plan includes a 3 meals and a snack, but I have three meals and a shake, there is no way I can get even close to enough Protein with just 3 meals. I also can't get in the fruits and veg they want me to eat. There is only so much room.

I do not snack between meals. I stick to the 3 meals a day and one Protein Shake somewhere between work and the gym.

So how many ounces of Protein by weight are each of you having? Those of you eating 3 meals a day only. How do you get your protein for the day in?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
