1wk post-op easy to drink fluids already ??

Recommended Posts

I’m 1 week post-op today, and it is already very easy to drink my clear fluids. I’m easily getting in my 64 ounces daily and then some as I am a big Water drinker. I am concerned that where it is so easy to swallow and drink fluids , I could unknowingly stretch my stomach. My PA told me my stomach acts as a funnel and then fluids are going right through , but I just wanted to ask if this is normal 1 week post op. Not that I’m complaining that it doesn’t hurt anymore , I just know they said I would have to sip my 1 ounce every 15 minutes and that ended on day 5!

I'm about one week post-op and am not having too many issues with hitting 64 ounces, as long as I remember to drink 8 ounces/hour. I think that the Water just gets flushed through the stomach, so it's more quickly than something like food, which has to go through digestion. I don't think it's anything to worry about 🙂 I don't think we'll start feeling restriction until we start with actual food. I'm allowed Jello right now and could only get in a few bites before I had to stop, it was much different from water.

It was the same for me... nothing to worry about!! Consider yourself lucky that you can get your Water in. It also bodes well for your ability to handle purees/softs. The procedure is NOT designed to restrict fluids--just solid foods. Even purees will pass through with relative ease. I am about to move on to solids, which I hear is when you really notice the sleeve. I had 4.0 oz of thinly slice roast beef for lunch with 1/2 a slice of cheddar cheese and I was full (not to the point for feeling sick or in pain--just comfortably full). It was nice since that would have been an appetizer to me in the past!!

As the others have already said, fluids become very easy for some people early on, it's nothing to worry about. I was the same way and I didn't really notice restriction until I hit my soft food phase. And even that is nothing compared to when my restrictions ended and I started eating "normal" food! Be thankful you're having such a smooth recovery and don't struggle with the fluids like some people do. Every body is different and heals differently. Some just have an easier time with it. Count yourself as lucky!

i was able to drink normally and get 60oz of Water in by day 5. i specifically asked my surgeon about stretching the pouch with liquids, and she said that i would not as long as i was not chugging 24 oz in a minute

I didn't have any trouble getting my fluids in either. I'm 5 weeks post-op now and still chugging along getting in at least 65 oz./day

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
