Coping with emotions

Recommended Posts

I had gastric sleeve in June. I am having difficulties coping with my stress and anxiety. I always have been stressed and anxious but I used to binge to deal with it. I have gone to therapists, but they have not been helpful with tips in dealing with the emotions while trying to reduce them. Any suggestions?

As you lose weight, the chemicals and hormones that were stored in your fat cells are being released into your body. These will pass through your kidneys and are expelled in your urine or through your sweat. But they can generate a flush of hormones during the weight loss phase. They should simmer down once you transition into maintenance. It is important to meet your daily Fluid requirements, because it take fluids to flush these hormones from your system.

Thanks for the utube suggestion.

I am disgusted by the hormone comment. While it is an accurate statement, it has nothing to do with the severe anxiety and depression I have had for years. Drinking more Water doesn't solve the nightmares I have had since I was 15. Show some respect and common decency.

I think you are being a bit harsh, the person who commented is not aware of your severe anxiety and depression. Unfortunately on forums we can never can a full picture when a poster asks a question, vents or seeks reassurance, we reply to the best of our ability.

I agree, I think you were a bit harsh. You did not mention the anxiety since you were 15. I think the hormone comment is very helpful and maybe, just maybe with your current / past situation combined with the new hormonal release you are experiencing a higher stress / anxiety level.

Have you spoken to your surgeon / doctors? I think they are the only ones that can help you. I can tell you that going to the gym and practicing mediation and Yoga are often helpful, but I think you really need to seek professional help and maybe look at medications to help.

Perhaps it wasn't emphasied enough...you mention stress and anxiety but not severe anxiety and depression. Regardless hormones may well be contributing to your current situation.

Anyway not to get off track, I hope there is a resolution for you, I wish you well.

Research the therapuetic help in your area. Try to find someone who specifies in your specific situation or closest to it. Maybe the person/persons you have seen do not know enough about what you are going through to help you. Your response to @James Marusek was not called for but that could just be a misunderstanding. Wishing you well and hope you get the help you are seeking. Good Luck!!!!

Hi Kimberly. I too struggle with depression and anxiety. It’s very easy to reach for food and binge when we feel off and I understand that your asking for helpful suggestions that may keep you from reaching for food. These are basic suggestions and it’s easy to give them an eye roll but put in practice...they just may help.

When the desire to soothe w food hits, refocus by taking a walk; get your hands busy with something - writing in a journal, checking out new videos on YouTube, cleaning (ugh), calling a friend/family member; or visualize a stop sign and say “stop” when you know you are reaching for food out of emotional stress and not hunger. You can also try (if you want to) putting a rubber and on your wrist and when the temptation to binge strikes, snap the rubber band on your wrist. It may seem extreme.

About @James Marusek He is a very positive person and I’m sure meant no harm. He wasn’t negating the severity of your concerns. He was trying to be encouraging by letting you know that things may calm some as hormones are flushed out of your system.

I wish you better days ahead 🌻

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
