Hi all!

I'm a 32 year old guy from Michigan who has struggled immensely with weight all of his life. In my adult life I've been as low as 190 at times and as high as 379 which is my current highest. I spent the last eight years living in Florida working a hectic job with a chaotic schedule that did not lend itself well to a healthy, active lifestyle and before I knew it between 2015 and 2018 I had ballooned up to my current weight. I knew that my previous methods had not been met with success and I decided it was time for a real change. After my husband got a new job in Michigan we relocated and moved in with my parents (who had acquired a much much larger house than the one I grew up in) so we could save up to buy a house and pay down some of our student loan debt without as much stress involved. This also gave me a chance to really focus on my health and take care of all this weight. Thankfully I have really solid medical insurance and due to my BMI I only needed to have a psych evaluation and PCP approval before I could have the surgery.

I opted to go with gastric sleeve as I find the fact that it doesn't completely change the route of my digestive system appealing, I have multiple friends who have gone through the surgery and have had great success with it, and the fact that it helps reduce the hunger hormone in your system as constant cravings even when I know I'm not actually hungry (as in like I just ate an hour ago) is one of my biggest issues.

I had my initial consultation in June followed by a psych evaluation in July. I attend my 3 hour pre-surgical class next Tuesday and my surgery is set for October 17th. I would have liked to have had it a little sooner but I also suffer from obstructive sleep apnea and just recently obtained a CPAP and I need to be on it at least a month before I can have surgery per my surgeon. I'm looking very forward to my life post surgery: being able to fit into smaller sizes and have more clothing options, being able to fit on all my favorite rides at theme parks again (I'm a coaster and adrenaline junkie), being light enough to sustain a solid workout again, and adding as many years as I can on to my life to spend more time with my friends and family. My only big fear is that I have not handled anesthesia well in the past and have a tendency to vomit immediately after waking up. I've told them this and they just recently did an upper endoscopy on me that I woke up from just fine, but I still have the fear that whatever they give me to combat the nausea and vomiting after the anesthesia will not be enough and the vomiting spasms will do damage to my stomach.

Some questions I have for you all:

1. Is dumping syndrome a thing as much for gastric sleeve patients versus gastric bypass? I'm in the process of weaning myself off of soda but I would like to use Mio in my Water to add some variety but it contains sucralose (Splenda) and I've heard that artifical sweeteners can still cause dumping syndrome.

2. Was loose skin a thing?

3. What was your first holiday season like post surgery? Was it rough having all those high-carb high-fat foods around? What kind of strategies did you use to work around that?

Looking forward to chatting with you all and continuing to use this forum as a support group!

1. It is, for some anyway. For both surgeries. For me, I don't have any problems with any sweeteners (or sugar really for that matter) Only real dumping I've had was from Tomato Soup made with fat free milk, still not sure what caused that, but, I haven't tried again (yet). Only way to find out if you will be effected, is to try out what you think you might be effected by. I found out that I can eat cake, cheesecake, chocolate, etc without any issues (which sucks actually because I wanted that negative response)

2. Loose skin is most certainly a thing. My highest weight was 370, check my profile for photos, I'm not overly concerned about loose skin at the moment, Down the line I'll more than likely get it removed, but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

3. My first holiday after the Band was Thanksgiving... followed quickly by Christmas and New Years. I just stuck to my diet, didn't really have any issues. I haven't had a major "food" holiday since being revised to Bypass, but I've had cookouts, parties, etc. I just eat what I can, I don't worry what anyone else thinks or says. Burgers turned into salads, not eating bread, only eating a few bites of something. No one seems to care really. ESP if you've told your family / friends already.

Welcome!

1- Dumping. I haven't experienced dumping after the surgery, however, since I don't have a gall bladder, I'm no stranger to " dumping syndrome ". I think I don't dump because I stay away from those types of food.

2- Loose Skin. Since I actually was the size of two people, yes, I have loose skin. The worse was/ is my upper thigh area. When we were about a month out from our Maui trip in May, I was upset that my bathing suit skirt was so short, I didn't feel very confident in it. Thankfully, swimming bike shorts are a thing! So, I just bought a couple pair and could wear all my swimming tops. Since I'm older, I will most likely not have any skin repair. However, I guess I will keep an open mind about that.

3- Holidays. I had my surgery October 10th, 2017. I will have to say the food was not an issue for me. My husband and I went to a really fancy restaurant for Thanksgiving and had the Turkey dinner. I just had a bite of a few things. I think I was most excited to get out of the house and eat normal food again! Christmas was a wonderful day with the entire family. Me cooking all their favorite things. Including all the Cookies, fudge, candy ect that their Grammy used to bring. (She passed away a year before, so I wanted to surprise the kids with all the things she would bring for Christmas).

All in all, I have had a great experience. I feel so much better!

Good luck with your journey. I look foarward to hearing how you are doing.

Di

Havn't had any issues with my sleeve. Have been able to eat everything I have tried without any issues. I avoided barbecues this summer because of being on the pre op diet or being so early in post op. As far as loose skin I can see having it on my belly for sure. But who know maybe my amazingly youthful skin will pull back to it's younger tight self. ;)

1. I've had zero issues with dumping. I've been able to eat anything I've tried, but just limited to how much I can eat.

2. Oh yes. After losing 182.5lbs, loose skin is there. Mostly around my stomach and chest. I plan to get skin surgery next year, but even if I didn't, the loose skin looks and feels 100000x better than the 182.5lbs of fat did.

3. I started my prep diet the week of thanksgiving last year and had my surgery right before Christmas on 12/11. It was ok, but a little annoying with family members always questioning why you're not eating all the junk. You don't realize how much life in general (not just holidays) revolves around food until you're forced to have a different perspective.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
