Has anybody had a endoscopy that they can share how the experience went? I am having this procedure done in a couple of weeks and I need to be up and ready to leave in about an hour after the procedure is done to get to another appointment within the hospital. Thanks........Bob

It depends on how things go and if you have a problem with anesthesia. However I had no issues but I think it took them more than an hour to release me after the procedure with recovery and filling out paperwork. They also tell you not to drive or make any important decisions since you were under and to go home and rest with someone watching you for the rest of the day.

They used propofol and it wears off pretty quickly, ask what they are using to knock you out. It was a piece of cake for me, I did not drive home and I think you could easily make the appointment if someone else drives you.

For me... I was awake before the bed made it back to recovery. Left like 30 mins later. Just don't opt for the "awake" version of the procedure, all sorts of horror stories from folks that had the procedure done while they were awake / semi awake...

I was awake while in the room while they prepped me and positioned me on my side then I knocked out. They told me it took no more than 15min. I woke up within 10min after. I felt like I had been asleep way longer and I looked beat up from my eyes. I looked horrible they said I gagged so much that I was actually pushing with my hands of course I don’t remember I was knocked out. My marks on my face lasted about 5 days. I was not allowed to drive after so I had someone with me because of that.

I have had 2, one in 2015 at the hands of a General Surgeon, one December 2017 from a gastroenterologist. Neither one did I have markings like you sustainef, whew you must have been a ? tiger while asleep. I'm so sorry you had to have such a reminder of that day. The first I had a little sore throat and felt hung over. Last December was fantabulous, easy going to sleep, easy wake-up and I felt GOOD afterwards, Dr Mujataba was wonderful. If I ever have anymore it will be a gastroenterologist that does it!

I personally do not think you will have enough time. Depends how long it takes you to wake up and how long it takes them to release you. Mine went smooth and I woke up on the way back to recovery, I was up and out in no time. My husband drove me home and I slept the rest of the day. I understand why they say not to drive or make any decisions that day. I would not have wanted to have to go to another appointment that same day. Best wishes, hope it works out for you.

You should be just fine going from 1 appt to another in the same hospital. They just don't want you driving... or making important choices until everything has had a chance to wear off 100%.

I hate to latch on to Bob's post. Please forgive me Bob. Did anyone have to use the prescription pain medicine or did they just take Tylenol? I really don't do well with prescription pain medicine it makes me very sick so I would like to avoid it if I could.

For what? If you are talking about the procedure, they will give you meds in an IV, what they give you, is going to be up to the doctor and what's generally acceptable/required for the procedure. But, if you are looking to get WLS, then you should be ready for the fact that you will be getting "prescription pain meds" through an IV during the surgery as well.

I'm ok with the medicines during surgery I'm just worried about needing them post-op. My doctor is prescribing a liquid pain medicine I'm just hoping I won't need it. Can I just take Tylenol post-surgery?

I had an endoscopy a few years back as well and as mentioned above, they put you out for a very short time under a light anesthetic. I remember them saying, "try not to gag as the tube goes in", as your going out..ya right! Anyway, I woke up feeling just fine and could have got up and left at that point but they do like to monitor you for a bit after. I don't remember how long but you might want to ask if they will let you go in time to make your next appointment, which sounds like is in the same hospital. Maybe they could just wheel you over!

It’s not a matter of the procedure being difficult or being too groggy afterwards, it’s whether they take you in ON TIME so you get out when expected! That’s the part I’d be concerned about.

I had one yesterday. My appointment lasted 90 minutes from check-in at the front desk to walking out the door. I was in recovery about 20 minutes after I woke up, so I think you'll be fine with an appt an hour later. I was sedated with Propofol and felt a little groggy for a few hours but other than that I was fine.

I had to have an endoscopy prior to my surgery 3 months ago. They put me to sleep so I dont remember a thing. You have nothing to worry about.

I have to have one every two years and I am fine once I wake up. Everyone reacts to anesthesia differently.
