why do i weigh more post op??

8 minutes ago, on my way to a new me said:

I am 2 days post op from gastric sleeve surgery and I got on my scale and it says I weigh 7 lbs. more than the day of my surgery, is this common??

Yes, it is very common. Almost everyone who is hospitalized and on IV fluids weighs more when they leave the hospital. It is easier for the body to absorb Fluid intravenously than by drinking, so the cells are very well hydrated. It is just "water weight" and you will stop retaining it soon. Keep with your program and you will soon see positive results.

The last abdominal surgery I had in August of last year, I ended up about 3 pounds heavier than when I went in. I was hospitalized for almost a month and did not eat anything (NPO) for three weeks. It was all of the fluids and medicines they pumped into me over the course of my hospitalization.

Yup, Fluid retention and swelling. You drop the fluids fairly quickly once you leave the hospital, but the abdominal swelling can take as long as a month. Relax, it's all good. And congrats on your surgery!

I came home 7.5lbs heavier than my morning of surgery weight. I don’t even count it in my weight looks. It’s all fluids and swelling. Just ignore it. It goes bye-bye in no time! Best wishes and congrats on your new life!

I weighed 12lbs more the day I was released from the hospital.

It was all fluids. It will go away quickly, I promise.

So common, I was 7 pounds heavier too when I cam home. It is all the IV fluids and swelling. Give it a week before you jump on the scale again.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
