Best Sugar Substitues

Recommended Posts

What are the best sugar substitues for

1-adding to cold food

2-adding to beverages

3-cooking/baking

There are so many options, I'd like to hear what you've enjoyed (ok, and what you hated, too!) Thanks!

My vote is for Splenda/Sucralose...all the way around. It's not sugar, but it tastes amazingly close to me. No diarrhea, and it won't kill my dog.

Would stand to reason that different people experience the taste of different sweeteners different ways, though.

Stevia tastes horrifically bitter to me. I get along pretty well with aspertame, but like sucralose better. Saccharin tastes as bad to me as Stevia does. Bleh.

That said, I think all of these are safe used in moderation.

Will offer one word of caution...if you use sugar alcohols like xylitol KEEP IT AWAY FROM YOUR PETS...it can kill dogs and cats. http://www.pethealthnetwork.com/dog-health/dog-toxins-poisons/xylitol-poisoning-dogs-a-deadly-sugar-substitue

Mostly splenda/sucralose for the best all around. Works when heated and even for cooking which many don't. It is taste neutral.

Stevia has it's own flavor to it so you either like that or you don't. I like it in some things, but can't put it in my coffee ugh.

I really like Swerve because it has a granulated version that cooks like sugar--so if you want to carmelize something you can--nuts, fruit, etc. It's sugar alcohol (Erythritol) with some oligosaccharides.

I find swerve is really good in recipes and sucralose liquid is good in beverages. Have some liquid stevia also but I never use it....so far since preop diet I have not used any at all other than what is in PP shakes, crystal light and Powerade Zero. For me, if I start baking or making sweet things that is a very slippery slope that I have cannonballed down before.

Another erstwhile sweeter, somebody's University Research in the late 60s Early 70s said it did. e-vile things and they yanked it off the market. And sweet and lo and the rest of the saccharine family took over the spot. Like Splenda it sweetened without a bitter aftertaste. Wish I'd stockpiled it!

I personally prefer Splenda, which also now has a liquid version (Splenda Zero) that comes in a Mio-like package. Saw it at Target for the first time this weekend.

How odd, even though I started this thread, I didn't receive any notifications. Maybe they all came when I was locked out of the forums.

How/why did you get locked out of the forums? Never mind, I just read your other post. I had to stop all the notifications because they were filling up in inbox but since I usually look on here a few times a day I am able to keep up with it.

You may have noticed from my post totals that I am rather a Chatty-Cathy. So my inbox was flooded. Now I've got the setting to one email a day. Much better!

Is honey bad to use? I hardly ever have anything with sugar in it especially now that I quit drinking coffee. I'm not a big dessert person either. I guess as I've aged I've lost my sweet tooth. Only thing I ever enjoyed ALOT pre surgery was tropical skittles.

Anyway, Honey. Is it bad to use as a sweetener?

Is honey on your plan?

Honey is the same as actual sugar in most ways—calorically and glycemic index are very similar. It’s not really a sugar substitute in the way these are.

Honey would not have been on my plan while I was losing weight and it isn’t on my plan in maintenance. I save my calories for things with nutritional value 90% of the time. Honey would be in the same treat category as sugar for me.

I looked at back of a bottle after I posted the question and was surprised at the numbers. Carbs=16g, Calories=60 and sugar=16g. I had no idea, thought it was natural so it would be ok for you. WOW.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
