So... what does Dumping Syndrome actually FEEL like?

Recommended Posts

Hi All ::

First post! July 11th Sleeve Gastrectomy, day 12, so still in the liquid diet phase.

I've been having some symptoms post "eating"... specifically, uh... shall we say, "liquid fecal urgency" about 10-15 minutes after consuming broth and/or Protein Shakes.

Is this "dumping syndrome"? I've read lots of clinical articles with fancy medical terminology, but they don't really describe what it FEELS like. I was hoping folks on this Board could provide some insight!

Thanks ::

Erik Da Viking

Nope, this isn’t dumping. ‘Liquid fecal urgency’ (or, as we call in in New Zealand, a fart with follow-through 😁 is really common until our tummies work out their new rhythm. A few people have it forever, but overwhelmingly it settles in the first few days, of as eating returns to solids. I am 7 months post op bypass - I get this occasionally (I just don’t let out a quiet gentle fart any more - too risky!) still.

Dunping - hot sweats, nausea but for me no vomiting, yawning, liquid fecal urgency, fatigue - feels like nasty food poisoning and suddenly 30-40 minutes later it stops. It has successfully put me off eating sweet stuff!

I had the same issues immediately post-op, and it was awful. However, mine was tied to whey Protein. My surgeon had me switch to a plant-based protein instead, and I had immediate releief. Bone Broth seemed to bother my stomach too.

For me, the best description of dumping is, a weeks worth of the flu, compressed into a few hours. Nausea, cramping, cold sweats, maybe a fever, diarrhea, some folks get vomiting, aches, pains, light headed and dizzy.... and then you feel like you got hit by a truck for a while.

Then you've got what I'm calling "light dumping" which is most of those symptoms just dialed way back but still super uncomfortable.

For me, I get fatigue, and heart palpitations. Some get diarrhea, and the other symptoms mentioned above, but you dont have to have all the symptoms.

Have you tried a lactose free shake like muscle milk? Some become lactose intolerant post pp. Try some diifferent Protein Shakes to see if it makes a difference.

Just wanted to let you know that Muscle milk isn't lactose free. As per their website.
http://www.musclemilk.com/learn/

DO MUSCLE MILK® PRODUCTS CONTAIN MILK OR DAIRY?
The term “dairy” on a food product, pertains to foods such as milk, cream, half and half, yogurt, ice cream, and custards. Since dairy is a regulated term, to qualify as a dairy product you need to contain Fluid “milk” or certain “dairy” ingredients conforming to the federal standard of identity for “milk“ or “dairy”.

Key Points:

  • MUSCLE MILK® Ready to Drink Protein Shakes are derived from milk (calcium caseinate, sodium caseinate, milk Protein isolate, milk protein concentrate and/or whey protein concentrate, depending on product.) Since these ingredients are more refined than milk, (reduced lactose, cholesterol and fat content), it is not the same thing as milk. So technically speaking, MUSCLE MILK® Protein shakes are ‘non-dairy’ and are labeled on the bottle as such. An example of another ‘non-dairy’ product derived from milk ingredients is non-dairy Creamers.
  • MUSCLE MILK® Ready to Drink Protein Shakes do contain milk Proteins and therefore should not be consumed by persons with milk allergies.

MUSCLE MILK® smoothie Yogurt Protein Shakes do contain milk in the form of Greek-style yogurt and added whey protein concentrate.

MUSCLE MILK® Protein powders, similar to Ready to Drink Shakes do contain proteins derived from milk, but in a powdered form.

It's important to note that Whey is made from Milk, and not all Whey protein is the same. whey isolate has a greatly reduced lactose content and that's what makes it easier for those with lactose issues to tolerate, but no Whey is 100% lactose free, since it's derived from Milk.

Thank you for the clarification. I mistakenly used generic terms that float around in my support group.

Our nurse suggests muscle milk when someone cant tolerate something like premier. Or pea Protein, egg protein, etc. It seems to be a common problem post op, and my main point was intended to be, "try something else till you find something that works".

Dumping syndrome for me comes in the form of heart palpitations, and as of last night fainting. So last night I cheated and ate a piece of candy, 3 pieces to be exact. I came up stairs laid down to watch tv. I didnt wait 30 minutes to drink, I waited like 30 seconds. flushing all the stupid sugar (candy) into my small intestine. An hour or 2 later my heart starts racing , once this subsided I got up to use the restroom, next thing I know I'm waking up on the bathroom floor with my face bouncing off the baseboard. First time fainting for me, and a lesson well learned. Oh, let me be totally honest here I also had been enjoying an alcoholic libation. ( I was not drunk, but I'm sure this alcohol combined with candy, along with not waiting to drink all combined to make a perfect storm. So yeah, I'm pretty sure I have a broken nose, my knee, hip, elbow and face are all nicely bruised. This could have been avoided had I not drank alcohol candy and paid closer attention to the rapid heart rate earlier.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

        That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
