Depression Meds post op

Recommended Posts

@jaksmommy you sang my song. It was hard to concede I had this need. But both Celexa and Wellbutrin made me calmer, sweeter and less likely to drop into tears at the drop of a "hat." There were days when the picture of a "hat" even did it
And I had bought into the fallacy that "normal" people don't,need help. We All have needs it's just that some needs are more visable that others.
Have you ever read the poetry of Edwin Arlington Robinson? If you have not that's cool, I'm an American Literature fan. At any rate. one of his poems "Richard Cory" deals with a young man everyone envied, smooth appearance, seemed have everything going for him, everybody said "what a wonderful, young man Richard is" and then one day he went home and ended his own life. Moral: None of us know what pain and sorrow lies in another person. And I have blue days that are almost purple, but I'm making it through and I hope so are you'!!😛🌈😛

Thanks to everyone that replied. The worst thing I have ever gone through was the sudden need for psychiatric meds 10 years ago. I would rather have a broken bone than go through the 2 or 3 weeks it took to find a combination of drugs that worked. I will talk to my psychologist about a possible replacement for cymbalta and ask about the siblingual Lamotrogine. I really appreciate the help.

Your first several sentences are exactly what I felt, although to be honest, I am still (After 10 years) trying to find a complete remission of anxiety. I don't think the average person understands how much these mental issues physiologically affect someone. Many a friend had an isolated bout of anxiety and as I walked them through it, they would often remark "Boy you're good at this" and then after it was over "Is this literally what you deal with, all the time" - Yep. Sucks doesn't it?

I wouldn't wish these things on anyone. And frankly I wish mental disorders didn't have such negative connotations against them.

Question for anyone who takes Trintellix or other new gen SSRI. I was taking prior to surgery stopped and thought I was good. Realized today that I need to be on them. I have so much stress at work and feel like I am a b***h all the time. I was also taking Vyvanse and want to restart it too. Any thoughts?

I am on an SSRI, and was on liquid post-op until last week when I was told I could start taking my pills again. THANK GAWD! I would be absolutely terrified to just stop cold-turkey with my pills. Anything I've read online suggests weaning myself at a very slow rate, should I decide to try it, but NOT WITHOUT a doctor's consult and checks. If I were you, I'd start it back up. Of course, by now you probably already have an answer to your first post. I decided, for myself, that I would be staying on my SSRI for at least my surgery because of all the posts I've seen about depression. Thankfully (PRAISE TO GOD) I have not struggled at all. And since I am NO spring chicken and probably also experiencing pre-menopause, I might as well make it my candy for life

Just following up on this. Did you ever try the TRINTELLIX, OP? About 3 weeks post op the celexa just pooped out me and it had libido side effects that were no bueno! So- my provider just switched me to TRINTELLIX to give that a trial. She also switched my bupropion to the regular kind and not the sustained release kind. She said, “no wonder you started going down!”

Hopefully this combo works, because I was in a really great place with the cymbalta and Wellbutrin XL combo and I’d like to get back to that motivated, happy place. :)

I'm not sure about the libido issues and SSRI's and how differently they affect women, but speaking from my own experience, they are all terrible, with the only exception being Luvox. It's one of the older, not commonly prescribed ones, as a matter of fact, you can only get it as a generic, but it has a minimal-to-moderate affect on me. Obviously Wellbutrin (Which hits the dopamine receptors really hard) improves libido many orders of magnitude. I wish it would work for me, but it makes my anxiety way, way worse. Going on a regular strength will probably help quite a bit. You could also see if you can get the smallest dose possible and take the meds several times a day for better absorption. Not sure if you realized it by your previous combo hit all three of the neurotransmitters, Serotonin, Norepinephrine and Dopamine. I just looked at the Trintellix wiki and it is a funky med in that it messes with the serotonin subtypes differently. Your current cocktail doesn't (appreciably) affect your norepinephrine receptors, so (In my non-formally-educated-in-pharmocology opinion), you might still lose the activation/energy that the norepinephrine provides.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
