HELP! How much should I eat, life after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had my gastric bypass surgery 3 months ago and I feel great I have lost 25kg so far and I need to lose 10 more to reach my goal, the problem is I have hit a plateau and lately I have been incredibly hungry and I'm afraid I might be stretching my pouch. I've started doing p90x3 two weeks ago and i definitely fell hungrier.

I want to know how many calories are you guys getting a day, how are those calories divided macros wise. For the most part I've been sticking to 1000-1300 calories a day and I have been eating quite clean but I've "cheated" a couple of times and I've felt that "desperate binge eating feeling" I have been able to resist it for the most part.

How do you guys curve your cravings and again what is your calorie intake while excercising

Hi @SpartanWolf

This might help. My surgeon has done longitudinal research on 1700 of his bypass patients, tracking and following their progress - health, weight loss, eating.

On average, they are getting around 800 calories a day, one year post op. But that is an average - some will be higher and some lower. I am sorry, I don’t know if he factors in exercise...

It’s so interesting to read this because our clinic wants you at at least 800 calories at two months out, working your way up to 1200. I am 2.5 months and eat 1000-1200 a day

Bear in mind I am in New Zealand - things re post op diet seem to be much more ... relaxed here. For example I was eating solids before I left hospital! My surgeon’s single instruction is “three meals a day, forever, is the single rule”. He advised volume would start tiny and gradually increase per meal to 3/4 to 1/2 cup, and take a tiny, basic Multivitamin daily.

That is all! No Protein encouragement. Re what to eat, he said ‘Experiment and find what works. Would be good to about potato, bread, rice - useless food that will just fill you up and not leave room for good food. You’ll probably never eat more that a teaspoon of ice cream.”

My earlier lap band advice, different surgeon, was similarly vague!

So

Biddy zz, Thank you so much. My surgeon was like that, very vague, nothing specific, "try to eat as much lean Protein as you can" was his only advise so it feels like I'm the dark.

Thank you TexasMommy80, I guess I'm not that off the mark, I just need to adjust what I'm eating and fight off the cravings.

Other than hitting the 60 grams of Protein minimum a day and 64 oz of Water, it seems that minimum calories are all over the place. I've been told at 4 months out not to exceed 600, which is hard. I think it has everything to do with age and activity. I get about 30 minutes on a stationary bike or a walk, and that's it. So without more activity, I guess my calorie intake has to be that low.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
