Reflux just a few days after Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hey all - I've been lurking on the forums for a while here, but I just had surgery a week ago and I have a question. I had GERD prior to having gastric bypass, and I understand that for many people, GERD resolves with surgery. However, tonight I had a tiny bit of heartburn happening. I used to have intense reflux if I didn't take my omeprazole, and this was just a fraction of that, but it still irritating.

So my question is - did anyone else have reflux this soon after bypass surgery? And if so, did it ever go away? Say, when your waist got smaller and stopped putting pressure on your stomach? Am I doomed to keep having reflux if it is popping back up this soon?

After surgery my doctor prescribed a daily dose of omeprazole for the first year. This was to allow my stomach to heal properly. After the first year I discontinued the use of omeprazole and have not experienced severe acid reflux since. I am 5 years post-op.

Perhaps you might speak with your surgeon and take the same approach.

Thanks for the info. I am back on the omeprazole, but I am just curious if this is something that may still go away, or am I stuck with reflux forever.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
